- A black and white portrait photograph of Joseph A. Bandel, 1826-1896.
- Notes
- Joseph A. Bandel was born at Sneidham, Wurtemburg Province, Germany, on January 17, 1826. In 1852 he emigrated to Canada, coming to Toronto via New York. He was a shoemaker by trade and moved to Whitby in 1858 where he continued in this business until about 1870 when he became a hotel keeper. He built his own hotel, the Whitby House on the south side of Dundas Street between Centre and Colborne Streets in 1875, but it burned down in December 1879. He built a new Whitby House in 1880, which was operated by his descendants until 1948. Mr. Bandel died on June 5, 1896, at Whitby. He is buried at St. John's Catholic Cemetery, Whitby.
This photograph was copied as a portrait by W.E.O'Brien. When Joseph A. Bandel died in 1896 the family had no portrait of him, so they took a family group photo (local identifier number 19-017-001) to W.E.O'Brien in Oshawa. Mr. O'Brien took a picture of Mr. Bandel, who was seated second from the left, in the front row and painted out the background so it looked like a portrait of Mr. Bandel alone. This served as the family's record of the founder of Whitby House. - Date of Original
