He was one of the best known stock breeders, importers and exhibitors in Ontario, and was particularly known for his prize winning Clydesdale horses. As well, he bred sheep and shorthorn cattle. He was a director of the Brooklin Spring Fair and South Ontario Agricultural Society and was president of the Clydesdale Horse Breeders Association of Canada. He won many prizes and awards at the Canadian National Exhibition, the Royal Winter Fair and the Guelph Winter Fair. He was a bachelor and a Mason, being a member of the Mount Zion Lodge, Brooklin. He died at Oshawa General Hospital on June 23, 1936 of blood poisoning contracted when he was carrying a calf over his neck into the barn.
