- This is a black and white portrait of John Smith (1841-1912).
- Notes
- John Smith was born in Yorkshire, England in 1841 and came to Whitby about 1863. He farmed for James Dryden at Maple Shade Farm in Brooklin and for many years was on the Dow farm. In 1889, he purchased 140 acres of Bayside Farm, located on the current site of Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences. He purchased another 12 acres in September 1902.
He married Sarah Crawforth on March 6, 1866 in Whitby Township. He was a member of the Whitby Town Council from 1879-1881, 1883-1887. 1889, 1891-1897, 1900-1902, 1904-1905, and 1907-1911. He died on January 18, 1912 and was buried in Union Cemetery, Oshawa.
