Thank you for this interesting article. I had 3 original journals I donated to McMaster Baptist History Dept. They were written by a student of the Woodstock Literary Institute, 1861 to 1870. He mentions Matthew Gold, of Whitby, On. in his writing. There is also an essay by Matthew Gold who submitted compositions for the commencement speeches in 1861.
The full diaries of Rev Ebenezer Muir Rice, an be found in Guelph University, Rural Roots, Oxford Historical Dept, and originals at McMaster Baptist History Dept. Hamilton, On.
Eben Muir Rice became a minister in Bothwell, On,1857 till 1870. He married Mary Key Bland from Embro, On, had three children, returned to Martinsburg, New York where he died age 31.
