- Notes
- Mary Shaddick was born at Hartland, Devonshire, England, on March 25, 1800. She remembered the bonfires on the coast of the English Channel when Lord Nelson won the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805, the great comet of 1811 and the great snowstorm of 1813. She was married in 1819 to Richard Hopper, they came to Whitby, Canada West in 1953. After her husband died in 1885, Mrs. Hopper moved to Oshawa where she remained the rest of her life. Mrs. Hopper died at Oshawa on November 21, 1903, aged 103 years, 7 months and 27 days. She was said to be the oldest woman in Canada at that time, and had lived under five sovereigns. She had the distinction of living in three centuries, the 18th, 19th and 20th. When she died she left 142 living descendents--three children, 52 grandchildren, 55 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great children. Her oldest living child was 84 years old at the time of her death. She was buried in Oshawa Union Cemetery, and is believed to be the first Centenarian that lived in Whitby or Oshawa.
