A black and white portrait of James Bradford Powell (1824-1902). This photo is printed in "Whitby United Church Centennial Book September 1926".
Notes
James Bradford Powell was born on the base line in Whitby Township in 1824. In the 1850s he quit farming and moved into the town of Whitby where he learned to conduct business at Carleton Lynde's dry goods store on Dundas Street. In 1857, he and John M. Lowes formed a partnership as general dry goods merchants, grocers, etc. known as Lowes & Powell. The business of the partnership was carried on at Lawrie's old Store on Brock Street (see Whitby Chronicle, April 2, 1857). In 1857, he and Mary Almond were married. In 1866, the partnership of Lowes and Powell opened a store at the Dominion Ware Rooms at the north east corner of Brock Street and Dundas Street. In 1879, notice was given that the partnership would be discontinued by mutual consent. The business was then continued on the old stand, "Dominion Warerooms" by J.B. Powell and Co. until about 1891 when Mr. Powell retired. After retiring from active mercantile life he held the office of Town Assessor for several years. (See The Globe October 23, 1902) He was a member of the Composite Lodge and treasurer for about 30 years. As well, as being a merchant, Mr. Powell was one of the founders of the Ontario Ladies' College and was on the board of this institution for about 22 years. He died from the effects of Bright's disease at Whitby on October 21, 1902 (see The Oshawa Vindicator October 24, 1902) and is believed to be buried on the Powell Farm, Base Line, Pickering Township.
