- A black and white portrait photograph of Jeremiah Lick (1830-1906). This picture is from a frame of portraits of members of Composite Lodge No. 30, AF & AM.
- Notes
- Jeremiah Lick was born at Richmond Hill, Upper Canada, on July 28, 1830 and moved with his parents to Darlington Township at the age of three. In 1856 he started farming on the 6th concession of East Whitby Township. He was a member of the East Whitby Township Council for 10 to 15 years, serving as Reeve in 1877. In 1880, Mr. Lick bought land on the south side of the Kingston Road between Kendalwood and Thickson Roads in Whitby, and had a fine stone farm house built in 1884.It was said to be the first house in Whitby Township with indoor plumbing.In the 1880s he travelled to Holland to study dairy farming and became one of the leading dairy farmers in Ontario. He also had one of the largest apple orchards in Ontario and shipped some of the first Canadian apples to England. The Lick family owned a 1903 Ford, one of the first automobiles in Whitby. Mr. Lick died at Whitby Township on August 4, 1906 and is buried at Union Cemetery, Oshawa.
