- Notes
- Thomas Deverell was born in Ireland, in 1828. He came to Whitby about 1845 where he learned the building trade constructing St. John's Anglican Church. He is believed to have been the first person married in St. John's Anglican Church, on November 11, 1850. Mr. Deverell built most of the brick buildings in Whitby from the 1850s to the 1890s. A set of stores on the west side of Brock Street South was known as Deverell's Block, because it was built by him in 1878. He was a member of the Town Council in 1861 and 1863-64. Mr. Deverell retired in the late 1890s and moved to Toronto where he died on September 21, 1910. He is buried in St. John's Anglican Cemetery, Port Whitby.
