- Dr. Horace Boscom was born at Uxbridge Village on 26 April 1863. He graduated from the Toronto School of Medicine in 1884 and spent three years as a doctor in Cuba, Jamaica, and England where he was named a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons.
After a year as an intern and house doctor at the Toronto General Hospital, he returned to Uxbridge in 1888 to be a country doctor.
In 1912 he moved to Whitby when he was appointed Registrar of the Supreme and Surrogate Courts and Clerk of the Ontario County Court. In 1935 he was appointed Sheriff of Ontario County and served until he retired in 1955 at the age of 92 and the oldest civil servant in Ontario.
Dr. Bascom was medical officer for the 34th Battalion and served as such for Ontario County's Battalions in the First World War.
He was a member of the Whitby Board of Education from 1912-1948. His recreations included playing golf and cards at the Millionaires Club in Whitby. Dr. Bascom died at Whitby on 4 November 1956 at the age of 93 and is buried in Uxbridge Cemtery. - Date of Original
