- Leaving Aberdeenshire in Scotland, George McGillivray landed at Quebec in 1833 and hadn't intended to settle at Whitby Township. While in Vermont, McGillivray received a letter from William Dow encouraging him to purchase land in Whitby Township.
After having spent time at Glen Dhu, the Dow family homestead in Whitby Township, McGillivray purchased Clovendale farm. Shortly thereafter his parents, brother, and four sisters joined him from Scotland.
In 1848 McGillivray married Caroline Amelia Fothergill and together they had 14 children. In 1870 the McGillivrays purchased a farm at Inverlynn from the late William Laing.
The McGillivrays were an important part of Whitby Township society and they were well respected. The sons became successful doctors and lawyers. - Date of Original
