In 1853 David Mathison married Elizabeth Tait (1825-1911) and shortly after the couple came to Whitby where they had six children: Margaret, Jean, Peter William, David, George Tait, and Jessie Christina.

John Tait Mathison was a local sculptor and tombstone maker who was trained by the Wolfenden family of Whitby. In 1886 he opened the Whitby Granite Company which operated for 40 years before it was sold.
