Notes

The Lowes family came to Canada in the early nineteenth century and settled at Cavan Township.

John McCarroll Lowes (1829-1902), second eldest son of John and Martha Lowes, married Charlotte Losie Annes of Whitby in 1856 and had three surviving children: Anna Maria Lowes (1859-1937), George Arthur McCarroll Lowes (1867-1925), and Charles John Waldeman Lowes (1869-1944).

In 1857 John M. Lowes opened a general dry goods store, Lowes & Powell, with James B. Powell in downtown Whitby. The shop closed in 1879 and John M. Lowes opened J.M. Lowes Company, a coffee and spice trading store, in Toronto.

Charles J.W. Lowes, youngest son of John and Charlotte, married Elizabeth Gwendolyn Carrington of Gananoque in 1907 at Kingston. The couple had seven surviving children: Elizabeth Gwendolyn Lowes (1908-1984), Charles Carrington Lowes (1911-1963), Charlotte Adelaide Mary Lowes (1912-1999), Joseph Roderick Lowes (1913-1985), Constance Hope Lowes (1917-2009), and John David Locke Lowes.

Charles J.W. and Elizabeth Lowes lived in Toronto where Charles took over J.M. Lowes Company after the death of his father.
