6 WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, FRIDAY, JULY 5, 1918 CAN TO CONSERVE: WOMEN ARE URGED * Summer and the supply of fruits and vegetables gives us an oppor- tunity to conserve in an easy, econo- mical way and at the same time benefit our health. Your active and intelligent co-operation thus far is fully and gratefully appreciated, but even greater and more concentrated effort is demanded of all of us. It is not patriotic to use canned food when fresh can be had. For instance; now is the time to can, dry or otherwise preserve vegetables and fruits. On the other hand, now is the time to consume plentifully all the vegetables and fruits and to can only that wich we do not immediately need. We ask you to urge the con- sumption of all vegetables and fruits while they are fresh! thus promoting health while saving labor and ex- pense of canning. 1f we follow this rule closely as individuals and com- munities, we are saving transporta-| tion and permitting greater quan- tities of the staples to be sent to our troops and our Allies. All, who can possibly use them, should write to the United States De- partment of Agriculture, Division of Publications, Washington, D. C., for the following bulletins: No. 871. Fresh Fruits and Veget- ables as Conservers of other staple Foods. No. 839. Home Canning by the One--Period Cold--Pack Method. No. 841. Home and Community Drying of Fruits and Vegetables. No. 853. Home Canning of Fruits and Vegetables. They will be sent free of postage or any other charge. Let us close our eyes for no single moment in mid-summer indolence. That we should fail to carry the bur- den which the World War has forced upon us is inconceivable for we have | our program and know that we can and must carry it out. U. S. Food Administration, Conservation Department. X-Ray At The Front The Army Medical Department has developed a mobile X-ray outfit for use near the front, carried on a mo- dified Army ambulance. It consists of a standard portable outfit made up of a Delco gas electric set, high- tension transformer, special type Coolidge tube, and includes an X-ray table, dark room, and complete set of apparatus for the localization of foreign bodies. Some of these out- fits are already in service abroad and 55 are ip course of shipment. Magazines For Soldiers Monthly magazines to be sent to soldiers and sailors should not be more than two months old, accord- ing to the Post Office Department, | and weekly publications should not | be more than three weeks old. | LIMITED CREDIT IS POLICY AT CLEANERS The debate on the question of cash or credit, which is being waged with a good deal of earnestness on the north shore, has received a con- tribution in the shape of an an- nouncement of policy by Ben L. Davy, local manager of Six-One-Nine dry cleaners. Mr. Davy announced that he was in favor of doing away with unlimit- ed credit as unfair to both the busi- ness man and to the vast majority of customers who pay their bills promptly. He declared, however, he did not see any reason for taking harsh measures, which might work to the discomfort and inconvenience of the public. "Our business will continue to op- erate on a credit basis," he said. "But our bills will be payable on or before the fifteenth of the month in which they are rendered. After the bill has gone as long as that un- paid, the customer must expect no further credit, but must pay cash for further service. "We shall extent credit to all those, who, upon inquiry, we find deserve credit. But we will not ex- tent credit blindly. "We are asking new customers who wish to have their names placed upon our books to call us up now so that we may make arrangements prompt- ly, and there will be no delay when they call on us for service." PASS ALONG THIS MESSAGE TO YOUR WAR GARDENERS This is the critical season for war gardens. With the first wave of enthusiasm on the wane, and the weeds and the bugs waxing bold, the war gardener may find all his pa- triotic effort of the spring gone to nought unless he gets out and works for all he is worth. The test of patriotism comes with the hot days of July, when every ef- fort of nature seems against the gar- den. Planting seeds in a neat row, is an easy matter but it is painful pulling of weeds and cultivating the ground between the rows, and carry- ing water to parched corners, that raises the crop. A farmer does not plant his corn, and then expects it to grow itself into fat yellow ears. He gets out in the hot sun and blis- ters his hands cultivating it. He sprays his potatoes, and "brushes " hd M " " ¥ up" his pea vines and "poles his beans. carrots and turnips must be thinned out, and tomato plants petted. A man or woman who deserts his war garden is as much a traitor as the man who runs away from the army. 1f your neighbor offers his life, surely you can loan your money.
