RLTLLILL 2, WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, FRIDAY, AUGUST 8, 1919 N.U. GRAD HEADS NEW TRIER HIGH Is Selected from List of 200 Can- didates for Position; Has Wide School Experience In 1905 a young man, a graduate of the Rossville, Illinois, high school, came to Evanston and told the authorities at Northwestern TUni- versity that he would like to enter the department of liberal! arts, but that he was without funds. They told him scores of young men with the . right spirit had worked their wav through and that there were plenty of jobs to be had if the right person went after them. Marriage No Bar Then the young man confessed further and said he was married. He was told a wife makes a big differ - ence, but that one is not necessarily a bar to a higher education. The young man entered, obtained stray jobs, including the janitorship at the emenway Methodist church, and in 1909 graduated after majoring in lis- tory under Professor James A James. Last week Eston V. Tubbs was ap- poitted principal of the New Trier igh school, one of the largest high schools in the country. Eston V. Tubbs is the same man who came to Evanston with a wife in 1905 to obtain an education. Has Wide Experience After graduating from Northwest- ern he was given a scholarship to the University of Illinois, where he ob- tained his master's degree. He then taught in the high school at Mat- toon, Illinois, later becoming princi- al. Two years ago when the new igh school at Tulsa, Oklahoma, was rompleted, Tubbs was selected ax superintendent. A member of the board of educa- tion at New Trier stated this week that Tubbs was chosen after a list o 300 applicants had been consider- ed. : "BIRTH OF A RACE" AT HOYBURN ALL NEXT WEEK "The Birth of a Race," characteriz- ed as the "greatest photo-play on earth," will be shown throughout the week of August 11-16 at the Hoyburn theater, Evanston. Since the pro- duction of "Intolerance" and "The Birth of a Nation," this is considered to be the greatest effort on the part of the motion picture industry. Every character in the cast is a star of renown in the silent drama. A coming attraction at the Hoy- burn will be, "The Woman Thou Gavest Me," the picturization of the famous novel of that title by the pen of Hall Caine, leading English novel- ist, whose "The Eternal City," was recently produced on the screen with such telling effect. "Stolen Orders," sensation of the speaking stage and one of William A. Brady's masterpieces, will be shown on Friday, August 8 William S. 'Hart in, "Wagon Tracks," is the attraction for Saturday, August 9. It means the loss of none of his accustomed pleasures, the sacrifice of no necessities.
