2 WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 12, 1919 MUCH GOLD MOVED EAST IN AUGUST . There was an extensive movement of gold to the far east during August, aggregating approximately $10,502.- 000 to Japan, $27,347,000 to China and upwards of $2,500,000 to India. From figures available it is estimated that over $100,000,000 in gold has been shipped to the far east since the em- bargo on the exportation of gold was lifted in June. The shipments are practically equally divided between | Japan and China. The shipments, from time to time, | from the Pacific coast have attracted | little attention and few realized that | they has assumed such proportions. | There is a difference of opinion as to | whether or not the gold shipments to | China are significant. Some maintain | that the present shipments are mere- | ly to supply China's requirements for the arts, because during the war she | had extreme difficulty in obtaining | gold and she is simply taking enough | to meet those requirements. Hither- to much of her gold has come from | other countries, but at present she | can only obtain it from us, and her | demand for it may cease at any time. | It 1s generally agreed that most of | the gold is being porked up and that probably a large portion of it will find its way to India. Some is doubt- | less being hoarded, and some held to exchange for silver when that metal declines from its present price. It is also thought by some that a consider- able portion of the gold being ship- ped is to be used as a basis for bank note isste. 4 : Silver, at the same time, has not been entirely neglected, as is evi- denced by the fact that even at its present high level, August shipments of the metal to China have aggregat- ed $8,000,000. This is very close to equaling one-half of the entire gold export to China during the twelve months ending June 30, 1919, which amounted to $24,571,791.
