n 3 Where Will Winnetka Children Go to | School in 1922 and 19247? | Cold facts are, after all, more ef- fectively in any debate then flow- ery eloquence. When it comes to a proposition of ergcting a new school building in Winnetka the citizens, fathers and mothers of the children | of d approaching school age, want to be apprised of the facts. They are desirous first of all, to know just why it is necessary to have a new school building. They waht to know just what is the relative increase in the increase in pupils --1500 indicated by the hei the increase in proper ¢ Number of Pupils | i the school girl city of present school buildings is indicated by height of school house a sity of a prompt and adequate in-| crease in our school facilities. "In looking over my Annual Re- port, it occurs to me that probably I am somewhat at fault in that | the statistics as to the certain out- growing of our present school facili- ties are not as clear as they might be. Hence, I have had the above chart drawn, picturing the utter hopelessness of our present situation, unless we build a new school. They want to be assured that the expenditure of money for school purposes in erection of a new school building is warranted and justified. President Laird Bell of the Win- netka Board of Education has pro- duced facts with reference to the overcrowded conditions in Winnetka schools. He has in previous issues of the Weekly Talk, explained and demonstrated by actual figures that, within a year it will be utterly im- possible to house the Winnetka school children in the present school structures and at the same time in- sure the best accomodations and systematic and effective instruction. The following chart prepared by Mr. Bell, accompanied by an ex- planatory letter addressed to the edi- tor of the Weekly Talk will com- mand the attention and careful con- sideration of every parent of school children in the Village. "Editor of the 'Falk': : "I find that a few residents of Win- netka are not yet awake to the neces- child's figure how fast our school population is growing--over 1200 pu- pils this year, and we are now vover- crowded. : "What is to happen as the child's figure grows in height, representing the careful estimate. --In 1922 of 1400 pupils? --Or, in 1924, of 1,780 pupils? "Our present school buildings can- not grow at an equal rate--in fact, beyond a few possible additions al- ready planned for, our school capaci- ty is practically at a stand-still. We face nearly fifty per cent increase in pupils in four years. Where are they to go to school? "Half-time sessions for Winnetka are unthinkable. Extra rooms in churches, halls, or private dwellings could not be considered even if such space were available. "Does not the chart prove our need of a new, adequate and properly equipped school building--and that right quickly? Yours very truly, Laird Bell, President, Winnetka Board of Education."
