PERLE EER RR RRR R TLR LRRERRRERRE 12 WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, DECEMBER 13, 1919 M ajor-General Leonard Wood Endorses North Shore Naval Training Project] Approval by Major General Leon-the naval training corps is now the ard Wood of the object of the naval training corps and of the plans laid out by the Naval Trainmg asseciation for carrying on the cadet organiza- tion is contained in a letter to R. A. Eddy, president of the association. This expression by General Wood, in which he states that the work is bound to have a beneficial effect upon the cadets and in which he expressed his wishes for the success and sup- port of the movement, may be of particular interest to prospective cadets and parents in view of the training association's intention to considerably enlarge the cadet or- ganization. The general's letter fol- lows: "Chicago, Ill, Dec. 4, 1919. "Pear Mr. Eddy : "I note with pleasure that you have decided to keep up the organization. If the program is carried on as laid down in your circular it is bound to have a beneficial: effect upon the boys, and in addition to developing habits of discipline, etc., it will give them a certain amount of very useful training and tend to build up and maintain interest in military train- ing. "Please accept my best wishes for your success and the hearty support which this movement deserves. "Sincerely yours, : "Leonard Woed." An Officer's Opinion This expression of General Woed's approval is of particular interest, as only military organization on the north shore for cadets of high school age, as well as the fact that the gen- eral's opinion is that of an army of- ficer on a naval organization. As a matter of fact, it is intended to make the activities sufficiently broad to interest boys and parents whether they have a particular interest in naval work or not. Fine Officers on Staff A recent addition to the staff of in- structors is Francis M. Knight, ex- lieutenant ( j. g.) U. S. N. There are now five ex-navy officers serving on the staff of the local organization as instructors. In some high schools all military work is in charge of one non-commissioned officer, and in Chicago, in the junior R. O. T. C. sys- tem, one army lieutenant is assigned several schools. In the local company of the naval training corps there is an ex-navy officer for each small group of cadets, an advantage and an opportunity that is unusual. The one other naval cadet organiza- tion, established some time ago in the east and recently organized in Chi- cago, makes no attempt to provide experienced instructors in this man- ner. The north shore organization, however, is considered a training corps for officers and is said to have esablished a standard in keeping with that object. Any boy over sixty-two inches in height may apply for en- rollment. More Victory Buttons For Discharged Heroes Of interest to all discharged men of the Navy and Naval reserves who served during the war and now re- side in this vicinity is the following notice from Naval Recruiting head- quarters: "A limited supply of Victogy but- tons has been received at the Navy Recruiting station, 608 South Dear- born street, Chicago, for issue to men of the regular Navy and Naval Reserve force who served on active duty between April 6, 1917, and November 11, 1918, and have since been .discharged from the Naval service. "The discharge must be presemted when making application for a but- ton. YOUNG PRINCE HEADS BOY SCOUTS OF ITALY In the Quirnal at Rome, the official town residence of the Italian royal family, there was a family celebration in honor of the fifteenth birthday of the Prince of Piedmont, the only son of King Victor Emanuel and the future King of Italy. Brought up in a tolerant manner by his father, the voung Prince is said to be all boy, through and through. For a youth of his age he has had some remarkable adventures. He is the head of the Giovanni Esploratori, or Young Explorers of Italy, a body that corresponds to the Boy Scouts in England and America, and he has done a lot of things that any boy would like to do.
