WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, DECEMBER 20, 1919 --_-- i ANECDOTE OF THE DAY OF THE FUELESS PERIOD AN When We Were Trying To Keep Warm They Shoved the Winter Right in Upon Us Glaziers this week placed a new plate glass front at the offices of the Winnetka Weekly Talk. Last week a terrific crash startled the neighbor- hood. Luckily it didn't happen on December 17 or wasn't an irate sub- scriber, and, consequently, bears no further signigficance than would any minor disturbance. Just at a time when the editorial staff of the Lake Shore News was! engaging in calisthenic pursuits in| an endeavor to be comfortable dur- ing the fuel shortage restriction] period, along came a playful boy and came a blast of December weather "He", all luding to the boy, "pushed me right through," sobbed his com-i panion. girl, danc 'ed before the plate glass | © witdow, scuffied in the snow and--| crash, went the plate glass, and 5 l} "DUST" EXPLOSION Until the summer of 1878 such a thing as a "dust explosion" was un- known. No doubt many such explo- stons had occured, but they were of small account and no investigation followed fo disclose the true nature of the case. In that summer the Washburn flour- ing mills at Minneapolis, then the largest in the world, exploded with terrfic violence. Several massive buildings, with 'granite walls two feet thick and of particularly strong mill construction were demolished as if by an immense charge of dynamite. The flame of the first explosion was communicated to two other mills which were destroyed in the con- flagration which followed. FIRST Use Well Your Gift. .The weakest among us has a gift, however seemingly trivial, which is pe- culiar to him, end which, worthily used, will be a gift also to his race.--Ruskin. 3 Illinoisans -- at the rate of 200 a day or one every ! months of 200 AUTOS PER DAY ARE BEING BOUGHT BY PEOPLE OF ILLINOIS are buying automobiles seven minutes, according to an In- ternational News Service dispatch. This unusual rate of new purchases is disclosed in the automobile depart- ment of Secretary of State Emmer- son's office, where, despite the near- ness of the year's end, applicants for auto license were being received at the rate of 200 a day. Mostly New Cars Walter Miller of Quincy, head of the department, says practically all of the applications are for new cars. Under the new state automobile li- cense article the year is divided into quarters and to keep within the statute it is necessary for purchasers of new cars to secure licenses for the entire last quarter, indfuding the October, November and December. One license has been issued for every minute of 1919 that has tran- spired. The present grand total of li- censes issued is 476,694 and Chief Clerk Miller expects this figure will go beyond 480,000 before the end of this year. Last year the total was 389,761, showing an increase this year of almost 10.000 licenses. Want No. 1 Number 1 is the most sought for numeral in the state. Approximately 700 applications are on file for this number. Next is 1920. Fully 500 ap- plications have been received for it. Under the new law a person desir- ing to retain last year's number must make application twenty days prior to January 1. Hundreds of autoists have taken advantage of this section of the act and have cations accordingly. This year's auto licenses will net the road fund of the state approxim- ately 50 per cent next year and the total income consequently will be about $3.500,000. Every cent of this money must go into the fund for the] construction and upkeep of roads. filed their appli- rr RL TT Ld 2 Ad § Several models Evanston 705 Main St. Evans 7 27 2 7777 272 277 27 2a 20 Zr 2 2 Ze 2 2 Zr ZZ Zr 2 272 27 FE, The most pleasing gift to HER and your family, will be . i We also Sell Cable ; hl or ho ul s on display at usic Shop 'Phone Ev. 3707 on YE and Players NLA le RR a a 2k 2dr 7d ares 77a) PL Rd a ddl dtl ld 2 dd Rl dd dtd A dd kdb dd de ddd det bid dai i Res W777 777774 any i ' ' ' , Lien td SRI ol YET TER QRS Plover: Rolls, Victor, Columbia, Pathe Records, Sheet Music. New License Plates The 1920 license plates will be of orange background with black nu- merals. This combination is said to be more readable than any except black and white. Passenger cars, trucks, tractors, deal- ers' cars and mortorcycles are in different classes and while the numer- als may be the same, each type will have its own distinctive recognition mark. For instance, "dealer" before the numeral indicates a dealers' li- cense. Trucks will have the word "truck" before the number. The 1920 plates will be mailed to applicants beginning December 20 and Chief Clerk Miller plans to work his force nights to get them out be- fore January 1. Application blanks have been sent to all city and village clerks in the state and also to all dealers, it is an- nounced. They may be ordered at any of those places.
