SATURDAY, APRIL 17, 1920 Too Many Cooks When the war began there were less than thirty-eight thousand men and women employed in the clerical work in Washington. When the arm- istice was signed there were 117,454 government. clerks. men and women who had been taken out of offices in other communities to do the emer- gency work of the government inci- dent to the business of the war. To- day more than a hundred thousand of these men and women are still occu- pying offices in Washington doing-- one wonders what? It requires a considerable amount of money to pay one hundred thousand clerks, money that the gen- eral public of the United States sup- plies in the many forms of taxation to which they are submitted. But there would be no complaint forth- coming from that long-suffering pub- lic were there any evidence that the army of clerks were in any way necessary or if the business that so badly needs doing gets itself done. So long as there is the general complaint from the men who were in of inability to secure settlement of the service of the army or the navy their insurance claims, so long as there is the general policy to let thing settle themselves that appears to govern in Washington the public has a very real grievance against the retention of the thousands of extra clerks, their withdrawal from the legitimate needs of the business sacrifice of time on their part and world with nothing to show for the money on the part of the people who pay their salaries. Jut grievances of the general pub- lic seem not to count for anything anywhere. The public has proved it- self both patient and harmless. ARDEN SHORE HELPS BOY TO GAIN STRENGTH Frankie Moore, aged 14, went over the top, nutritionally speaking in thirteen weeks at Arden Shore, the camp for working boys at Lake Bluff. Then he went back to work, which he had to quit because the employ- ment certificate found him physically below par. The Arden Shore association has cared. for forty boys during the win- ter who were physically handicapped or in poor health. It is supported by private subscriptions, on the North Shore, and needs more of them to carry the work through to the be- ginning of the summer camps in June. Going To Move?
