WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, MAY 22, 1920 Facts About Hoover (By Campaign committee Hoover for president club at Winnetka.) Herbert Hoover was born in 1874 at West Branch, Iowa. He was" left an orphan at 6 years of age and went to live with relatives in Oregon. When he was 14 years old he began to support' himself and entered Le- land Stanford university in 1891. He worked his way through the uni- versity and graduated as a mining engineer. He worked as a common miner and-gang foreman in Nevada for one year and then became a clerk in the office of a California mining engineer. He married Miss Lou Henry, a graduate of his own university. The years between 1897 and 1914 he spent in. mining operations all over the world but maintained Cali- fornia as his legal residence and last | voted there--the Republican ticket-- | in 1912. In 1916 he did not vote be- cause he was then doing Belgian Re~ lief: work in Europe. He became a member of the New York Republican club in 1909 and is still an. active member of that organization. He was appointed United States Food Administator in 1917. In 1919 the Allied and, Associated Powers appointed him director gen- eral of Relief and he organized the American Relief Administration. From December, 1919, to March, 1920, he acted as vice-chairman of the second Industrial Conference in Washington. This service, supple- mented by his previous great ex- perience, has given him a close knowledge of industrial conditions in the United States. Charles E. There will be a golf ball sweep- stakes tournament for men members, Medal play, and qualifying rounds for the Decoration Day events. Women members will play Bridge at 3 o'clock. Dinner is to be at 7 o'clock followed by dancing. The day marks the official opening of the club for the season.
