Three hundred and twenty workers are being enlisted for the drive which will begin June 1 and continue for one week, covering every precinct in Chicago and the suburban towns included in this district. Suffer Fire Loes Last February fire destroyed the main building and infirmary of the sanitorium, which for fourteen years has been one of the most staunch bulwarks in the winning fight being waged against tuberculosis. Though the numerous cottages on the grounds escaped the flames, all of the bed-ridden patients had to be hastily removed to other institutions and the work of the Edward Sani- torium has consequently been seri- ously impeded. These buildings must be rebuild, bigger and better than before, and fully equipped with laboratories, dis- pensaries, X-ray department. There must also be a nurses' home, new ad- ministration and service building, a modest auditorium and library, and vocational training shops. First Fund Appeal To do this work $500,000 will be re- quired. Though the Edward Sani- torium has in fourteen years treat- ed 2,103 patients with wonderful suc- cess, it has never before made any appeal to the public and has never been in debt, thanks to the generous help of individuals. Deeply significant of the splendid humanitarian scope of the Christian and Jew have united in this campaign, and a joint appeal to the clergy has been issued by the Chicago Church Federation and the Rabbinical association of Chicago. Every pastor of every Protestant Christian church, every every reformed Jewish has received an appeal signed jointly by the Rev. Dr. Herbert I. Willett, president of the Church Federation, and by Rabbi Joseph Stolz, president of the Rabbinical association, asking them to urge the cause of the Edward Sanitorium in their services Saturday, May 29, and Sunday, May 30. Leaders Behind Drive Dr. Frank Billings is general chairman for the campaign, and the advisory committee includes such men as David R. Forgan, John V. Farwell, Cyrus H. McCormick, E. D. Hulbert, Victor Lawson, Harry Hart, Clifford W. Barnes, Ernest A. Hamill, John E. Wilder, John G. Shedd, W. E. Clow, Thomas D. Jones, D. F. Kelly, Charles H. Wacker, John T. Pirie, Henry T. Lytton, George W. Perkins, E. J. Lehmann, Dr. Robert H. Babcock, A. G. Becker, Dt. J. A. Britton, E. J. Buffington, E. F. Cary, E. A. Cudahy, Rufus'. C. Dawes, Dr. W. A. Evans, M. S. Florsheim, C. W. Folds, Dr. Ludwig Hektoen, Samuel Insull, R. P. Lamont, George A. Mc- Edward Sanitorium is widely and A. Pusey, F. H. Rawson, John A. properly regarded as one of the big factors in reducing the death rate by more than one-half. The ideal of the institution and the niche it fills in the general anti-tuberculosis scheme of Chicago is that there shall be treated, at cost, those patients who wish to pay their way. This is slightly in excess of $20 per week, for every- thing. Modern Equipment This affords the person of moderate means the opportunity for recovering i health as completely as in Colorado or Arizona, and with complete main- tenance of self-respect, or the pride that rejects charity. And that is a most important consideration in these modern days. The campaign, June 1 to 8, to raise sufficient funds for required con- struction is deserving of the support of every man and woman in Cook county. If you are not solicited offer your contribution or pledge at the office of the Chicago Tuberculosis Institute, 8 South Dearborn street.
