SATURDAY, JUNE 5, 1920 National Humiliation The convention of the Internation- al Woman Suffrage association opens in Geneva, Switzerland, June 6. This will be the first such conven- tion since the outbreak of the Euro- pean war and much has happened in the enfranchisement of women since that time. Some twenty-nine coun- tries have extended the rights and privileges of citizenship to their women, making the responsibility and the privilege more even. The United States, except a few states, has not yet seen fit to come into this group of progressive nations, bpt it may be that the wise men who control the affairs of the nation will be able to see things in a little different light after the national conventions have finished their work and the platforms upon which the campaign is to be made are finally constructed. If there is no wet plank included in either platform, as it is improbable there should be, the prejudice against the enfranchisement of women which now exists in the breasts of those gentlemen in Delaware, will be ma- terially lessened, if not entirely eradicated. Tt is a little humiliating for the women of the United States that the one country that made the war sac- rifice in order that the world might be made safe for democracy should, in this world convention, have to be listed with those other backward na- tions that still entertain the practice of imposing "taxation without rep- resentation" upon one-half their adult populations. The women will feel the humilia- tion, albeit they are in no way re- sponsible for this lack of consist- ency upon the part of the men of the legislative bodies who are holding back the franchise from them. The other nations will wonder how sin- cere were the protestations of the government of the United States in other matters concerning the war when they see its utter lack in this instance. The conservative person is afraid of what may happen in the financial world and is disposed not to indulge his desire to spend in subscriptions to the charitable or public movements to which he is asked to contribute. This ought to be a time for con- servation. It is no time to expand in any way that involves the outlay of a considerable sum of money. This is the preachment of the government.
