The local fire department was call- ed to a house at 840 Linden street, Hubbard Woods, last Saturday in re- sponse to a call from the owner, Miss FRENCH, Commissioners Vote To Purchase Vast Tract of Land Skokie valley, 2,000 acres more or less, of this marsh tract, noted for its geological history and natural beauty, extending from the north limits of Peter Hoffman's farm on the south, bounded by the city limits of the north shore villages on the east and the Chicago and Milwaukee railroad on the west and as far north as the Cook county line, is to be added to the Cook county forest preserve. After a wrangle dating back more than three years and involving a number of prominent north shore and Chicago people, the county board of forest preserve commissioners voted this week to adopt the plans of their subcommittee and proceed to acquire the land whenever price negotiations may justify. Includes 8,000 Acres The Skokie tract in its entirety in= cludes same 8,000 acres of which the county board plans to purchase 2,090. Some improvements may then be made but chiefly the tract will be allowed to remain in its natural State. The plan for the purchase of the Skokie valley was first suggested and furthered by the body known as the Chicago plan commission. This com- mission published the plans for the acquisition of this land and held several public hearings at which the proposition pro and con was thor- oughly thrashed out. The opponents of the plan urged that this fertile tract be preserved in private ownership for cultivation and habitation. Skokie, a filled in swamp, is, along its edges and ex- tending each year farther into the center, a garden spot, wonderfully fertile. The many possibilities for production aided by its proximity to transportation argued against the purchase. Must Be Extended It was argued, however, that the necessity of extending the limits of the forest preserve with the growth of the lake cities was an imperative one. This view prevailing, the board appointed a sub-committee to look into the details of the purchase and it was their report which was adopt- ed. The purchase will be consum- mated as soon as satisfactory prices can be arranged.
