Henry Kitchell Webster, Novelist, Says "Modern Girl" Is Not Very Dangerous "Fair and square, frank, and inde- pendent, in spite of lipsticks, ankle display, and happy-go-lucky attitude toward life, and not half so danger- sous as her demure grandmother of the sixties," is what Henry Kitchell Webster, novelist of Evanston, has to say for the modern girl. At a meeting of high school teach- ers in Chicago recently "Evanston's own novelist" led the first of a series of discussions on the "restless age and the high school girl" which the Chicago schools committee is con- ducting this fall in an effort to dis- cover better ways of moulding char- acter in the adolescent period of young womanhood. Fierce Independence "It does take the breath of us, who are older," said Mr. Webster, "to see the fierce independence of the girl of today, but there is another side to the question and parents and teachers must recognize the new day and enter into the spirit of it to counteract its bad points. "Girls today are less likely to make serious moral slips than girls of past generations. "Their mothers and grandmothers rouged in secret, hoping to make the rouge seem real, and they rouged very badly. The girl of today says, I'm supposed by the wogld to be pretty. All right. Here goes! and she uses her lipstick artistically, openly and effectively. "She makes no pretense. Her an- cestress let an ankle show under bil- lowing hoopskirts and pretended she didn't know it. "The girl today says to the world, 'You're always peeping at my ankles. Here they are', and she wears skirts almost to her knees. She is frank, candid, fearless. Her mother got more sentimental and emotional thrill out of a chary handclasp in the minu- et and round dances than she gets out of the closest of up-to-date jazz dances. "Sentimentality is dying. Girls aren't so susceptible as they were. The basis of all this so-called hold- ness, this exaggerated frankness and mdependence of girls is an honest frank inquiry into life. "We must get out and help young women find their places in the world, for they are determined to be self- supporting, to defy old traditions, to not be a mere adjunct to their fathers' homes. ' Better Citizens "They are fairer and better citizens of the world, I believe, than their grandmothers. They do not insist that they are the equal of man and then demand that he give up his seat in a trolley car. They are, this new generation, as square and fair as men. "Notice them on the roads in auto- mobiles. The younger girls are better sports than their mothers, they give the road honestly and do not presume to take advantage of their sex."
