Manufacturers as a whole have apparently adopted the policy of producing and putting in pile a normal supply of lumber and when this normal level is reached production will be curtailed to pre- vent undueaccumulation. For example, a number of telegrams received by the American Lumberman indicate that hardwood manufacturers, on the whole, intend to continue pro- duction until normal stocks are on hand and thereafter will materially curtail production. In fact a number of manufacturers at this time are curtailing * production somewhat. so that they may continue to offer em- ployment to their men and at the same time accumulate sticks slowly. Hardwood stocks, on the whole, have not as yet reached the normal level. Out of a list of eighteen representa- tive companies in the south and east only five reported normal or above normal stocks. Demand Light "The demand for southern pine, Douglas fir, North Carolina pine, hemlock and other ordinary con- struction wood continues to be light. Shipments are not heavy because of lack of orders, and also because in some sections the car shortage con- tinues to be so severe that shipments cannot be made.
