In- creased responsibilities which the Institute, must shoulder in 1921 necessitates a more strenuous effort than ever has been made in any previous sale, and Mr. Phillips, who supervises all the territory in Cook County outside of Chicago, is confi- dent that this year's organization will smash all records. In addition to the little Christmas Seals, which have made themselves familiar and welcome visitors in thousands of homes in the County every Christmas, the Institute this year is offering an innovation in the form of "health bonds" in denomina- tions of $5, $10, $25, $50 and $100, each dollar invested representing the purchase of 100 seals. The bonds guarantee the purchaser extraordin- ary returns in community and indi- vidual health. The return from past sales of the penny seals has financed the clinic and nursing service which the Insti- tute has maintained in about twenty- five Cook county towns. It also has made possible the introduction of the Modern Health Crusade, "the fastest growing movement in America," into the schools in the county. Mr. Phillips estimates that approximately 25000 boys and girls already have been enrolled in this crusade work and the work will be extended as rapidly as the returns from this vear's seal sale permit. Unusual encouragement has been given to the workers in the 1920 sale by Mr. Phillips in the form of tuber- culosis statistics obtained from County Clerk Robert M. Sweitzer. It is the first time these figures ever have been 'available to the public. Covering a period of thee years 1917, 1918, and 1919, they show a marked reduction in tuberculosis deaths since the installation of the clinic and 26 per cent following two years of active work and propaganda financed 1 hy the penny Christmas Seals. A wealth of valuable information was obtained through Mh. Sweitzer's courtesy in giving out these statist- ics. This information has been of great aid to the nurses of the Insti- tute staff in uncovering "contacts" and, in many cases, incipient cases of tuberculosis. Relatives of persons who have died of tuberculosis within the last three years were visited by the Institute's nurses, and many were induced to attend clinics for the de- tection of possible infection. "Cook county is generally consid- ered, among people who are in a po- sition to know, as the leader in the nation's battle with tuberculosis," said Mr. Phillips, "and we can main- tain that reputation only by buying and using Christmas Seals and Health Bonds to the utmost limit of our ability. For that is what finances our fight. : "Cook county's generous response to our appeal last year leads me to predict that, owing to increased in- terest and better selling organiza-) tion, we will smash all records this year. The fight is winning, but not won." 4-YEAR OLD CHILD DIES FROM PURE HAPPINESS Martin's Ferry.--Excitement, due to watching her pet dog play "horse" with her playmates, caused the death of Minnie, four-year-old daughter of Mr .and Mrs. Robert Hicks, living north of this city. The child had been ill of scarlet fever and was recovering. The phy- sician, fearing the effect of sudden excitement, cautioned against any- thing that might cause a strain upon the heart. Playmates hitched her pet dog to a small wagon and called to the child to look out of the window beside her bed. She became so happy watching the antics of the pup that she col- lapsed and soon succumbed, the heart being unable to withstand the strain. | BOSTON BAKERS CUT Boston.--Doughnuts are cheaper. Several bakers followed the lead of bakers in Portland, Me. who have announced a cut from 10 to 20 per cent in prices of doughnuts, cakes and cookies and have reduced local prices correspondingly. One of the large system bakeries, with stores throughout the city, has reduced the price of doughnuts from 35 cents a dozen to 33 cents. Crullers are reduced from 40 cents a dozen to 35 cents.
