14 WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, DECEMBER 11, 1920 ASK $50,000 GIFT FOR DISABLED MEN State Organization of the American Legion Seeks Christmas Gift for Disabled Buddies. For the purpose of entertaining every disabled ex-service man and woman, receiving treatment in the seventy-two hospitals throughout the state, on Christmas day, the Illinoi department of The American Legion is asking for $50,000, as a Christma gift from the people of Illinois to its disabled ex-service men. Every post is being called upon to aid in obtaining the funds that wil assure a real Christmas tree for each of the hospitals, as well as suitable presents, delicacies, smokes and en tertainment. To Remember Men. To show the men that their former comrades have not forgotten then and to help them forget their cares and worries is the slogan adopted by the department. "This is not a spasmodic effort on says Wm. R. McCauley, department command- er. "We intend to furnish entertain- ment and programs for the men and women all through the winter with the funds that obtained in this drive. "The people of Illinois are loyal to those who fought for them. They have not forgotten them, but many do not realize that more than 4,000 'are in institutions and hospitals re- ceiving treatment for diseases and the part of the Legion," wounds contracted in the service. Asking Support. "We are asking support in this drive and we are sure that the heart of everyone is with us in this inter- prise." Committees, consisting of members of the executive board, post officials, service officers and members, will be appointed to supervise the work of caring for the hospitals. It has been estimated that the cost for each institution will be nearly $500 during the Christmas holidays. This includes the Christmas tree, presents, eats and delicacies, smokes and entertainment. A large portion of the funds are also to be set aside for clothing and necessities for the men and women that are not furnished by the govern- ment. Then, too, expenditures are to be madg in caring for the de- pendents of men who are unable to support them. CHILDREN BOOST SALE OF CHRISTMAS SEALS Predict Record Sale of Stamps on the North Shore; Each Stamp Helps to Fight the White Plague S| All indications pont to a record breaking Christmas Seal campaign not only in the local community, but throughout the entire county. Local organizations all over the territory 1 covered by the Chicago Tuberculosis Institute are reporting to James F. Phillips ; who has charge of the cam- S _| paign, a tremendous early sale of seals. Appreciate Needs The work the Recop/sisd in county towns by the staff of sixteen 1! nurses of the Institute has brought to the residents a realization of the benefits made possible by the penny Christmas Seal. In addition to the nursing and clinical services rendered, the In- stitute has been able to organize in many of the county schools work among the children, known as the Health Crusade. Approximately 25,- 000 children in the county have been enrolled in the past few months. The extension of this work depends great- ly upon the response to the present Christmas appeal. The statistical re- port prepared by the Institute, with the co-operation of Robert M. Sweitzer, County Clerk, has enabled the nurses to locate thousands of contact cases throughout the county. The County .Clerk's records show that during the year 1917, 1918 and 1919 2,353 persons died of Tuberculosis in Cook county, outside of Chicago, the names of which have been placed in the hands of the visiting nurses, and the relatives of these diseased persons are now being called upon and urged to undergo a medical ex- amination. Help the Cause Towns in suburban districts throughout the county realize the need and value of the community nurse. Your purchase of seals and Health bonds, whether it be $10 or 10 cents, will help during the year 1821 both in prevention and cure of Tuberculosis. Many visitors at the show singled this car out as one of the finest examples of automobile craftsmanship which have been pro- duced. Its individuality in appearance is the result of its being entirely hand- made. Mr. Briggs and his assistants, in talking economy in connection with the car, explain that not only is its initial cost low, but it is economical in operation, since it gives a mileage of 16 to 18 to the gallon of gasoline.
