WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, APRIL 16, 1921 Station Park Near Realizatian For Indian Hill Proposition to Acquire Large Tract of Land Adjoining Northwestern Right-of-Way Wins Approval of the Residents in the Southeast Section SCHOOL PROBLEMS By Supt. Washburne Note: This column will be run from time to time hereafter as ques- tions calling for answers are re- ceived by the Superintendent of Schools. Q. If a pupil does not finish his work in a certain subject by the end of the year, will he make his grade? A. All pupils will normally pass to the next room higher each year re- gardless of whether or not they have completed their work in all subjects. They will not, however, begin the work of the next grade higher .in any subject until they have completed the previous grade's work and have received a promotion in that subject. For example, if a fourth grade pupil has not come up' to the standard re- quirements in arithmetic in June, this will not prevent his going on into the fifth grade room. But he will not begin fifth grade arithmetic until he has completed his fourth grade arith- metic work. Grade repetition is im- possible under the individual system. But a thorough attainment of each grade's standards in every subject is consistently required. 'Q. If a child reads books outside of school, can they be credited as school reading? A. If the books are included in the book list for any one grade, .they may be counted for school work, pro- vided the pupil car pass an examina- tion on the book or make a success- ful written or oral book report. Books not on the grade list may oc- casionally be added to it and thereby . iLL Careful Garage Service-- When your car is placed in our hands for garage service it is safe while it is here and when it leaves us it goes out in perfect condition. Q. When a child brings home a white slip saying that he will not complete his work in some subject by the end of the year, what does it mean is going to happen to him? A. Nothing will happen to him. He will simply have to complete it during the summer or the next fall. The white slips are merely to notify the parents that their children are not making normal progress in some one subject. They are in no sense warnings that the pupil will "fail to make his grade." See answer to the first question above. SYNCOPATION LEADS WAY IN GIRL SCOUT DANCE The annual dance of the Winnetka Troop, Girl Scouts of America, will take place on Friday evening, April 22, at the North Shore Country Day school. Tickets are going fast, in fact it appears as if the entire young element of Winnetka is going to be present. A syncopated orchestra has been procured for this evening and the boys have promised to do their jazziest playing. Girl Scouts will call on you within the next few days in order to give you an opportunity to buy a ticket. The girls are contesting strongly for the honor of selling the greatest num- ber of tickets; this honor will en- title the lucky scout to lead the grand march. Tickets may also be secured from Lieut.
