Guarding Our Morals An ingenuous protest is being made by Américan film manufacturers against the showing in America of films made in Germany. Special ref- erence is made to the two pictures which have formed a part of the rep- ertoire of the moving picture palaces recently. "Passion" and "Deception," plays which deal with the lives of Madame Du Barry and of Henry VIII of England. These, according to the moralists in the motion picture indus- try, are designed to "present in a bad light" the nations which fought against Germany in the war. It is not a sordid desire to prot€ct against German competition their own industry that is moving the men of the filth industry to protest against such insidious methods of undermin- ing the respect of Americans for te people of long-ago France and Eng- land. Quite the reverse. They are indignant at "a most subtle attack on France," which is the end and aim of the Du Barry film and of the "fundamentally anti-British" influence of the picture that tells of the ex- periencves of Anne Boleyn. The de- piction of scenes of the French Rev- . olution. "one of the most serious up- risings against law and order that was ever enacted," stirs the guardians of the morals of America to grave un- easiness. The American film makers will have little company in their misery because of the threatening of the morals of America through acquaint- ance with the history of other na- tions of the world. The general Am- erican public, indifferently provided with historical knowledge, will. not be much disturbed over such films as present incidents from the pages of the past. Unless they can think of something a little more in keeping with their own standards of what is good for the morals of the motion picture public than they exhibit in the products of the studios--the bath- ing girls and other such displays of beauty unadorned--they will serve their own purpose better by maintain- ing a silence on the subject. What little disposition there was here to endow the German people with hoofs and horns and to see in everything that was done an attack upon the good opinion held here of the French and the British has long since been dissipated: through the sanity of the post war period. There increasing may be ample room for criticism of the films, "Passion" and "Deception," and probably is. But it is the rare picture that meets the standards of the American with any taste at all in the arts. facturers may well look to the beam in their own eye. Stevenson, Director National Home Gardeners' Association FERTILIZER The best all round fertilizer for the home garden is well rotted horse ma- nure. Manure not only conserves the moisture and adds plant food to the soil, but loosens 'it up making it easier to work and for the plants to grow. "Rotted manure releases the substances in the soil so that they are in a form that the plant can use. For example, your soil may contain an abundance of potash, a food which all plants must have, but in a form which the plants cannot use. Plenty of manure makes it possible for bacteria to act upon the potash and change it into a form so that the plants can use it. Well rotted man- ure and not fresh should be used. The three elements which are pres- ent in the soil but in sufficient quantity are nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. These three elements are absolutely necessary to all gar- den vegetables. These are. found in manure and commeretal--fertilizers which are called complete. While the complete fertilizer adds these three elements to the soil, it has no power to release the unavail- able substances already present in the soil. The exclusive use of com- mercial fertilizer make the soil less able to hold moisture and resist drought. The 'commercial fertilizer should be used with stable manure. The quantity of manure to use is 4 inches spread over the ground before spading. 3 It is a good plan to add lime to the * KENILWORTH HAND LAUNDRY KIDS Y YOUR CLOTHES WE 8 NEVER WILL ABUSE -- THE GREATEST CARE # WE ALWAYS OSE We have built our reputation for expert laundry work upon the solid foundation of con- sistent care. @ur prices are agreeable. -:- -:- KENILWORTH 222 GLENCOE 25 OYBUR 615 Davis St., Evanston MATINEES 2 and 4 Evenings 7 and 9 Saturday May 14 George Randolph Chester's ~~ Great Story "TRUMPET ISLAND" With An All Star Cast Pathe News Rolin Comedy NEXT WEEK Mon. and Tues., May 16 and 17 HOPE HAMPTON in "Love's Penalty" Wednesday May 18 GRACE DARLING in "Every Man's Price" Thurs. and Fri, May 19 and 20 Mr. and Mrs. Carter De Haven in "The Girl in the Taxi" COMING CONSTANCE BINNEY in "The Magic Cup" LIONEL BARRYMORE in "Jim, the Penman" WANDA HAWLEY : in "The Outside Woman" MARY MILES MINTER in "The Little Clown" soil as it helps to release plant food, land corrects any sourness that may exist in the: soil.'
