2 WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, JULY 9, 1921 -- CO-EDS BOOST OWN SPORTS AT U. OF L Miss Helen Evans, Wilmette Student At State University, Explains Why Women Boosted Stadium Drive "One big reason why the co-eds worked so hard in the recent suc- cessful University of Illinois student Stadium campaign." said Miss Helen Evans, 616 Gregory avenue, Wilmette, one of the major committee leaders, "was simply that we might secure adequate and suitable playground facilities, to replace the rather meagre equipment that we have on the campus at present. "Our committees ranked equally with those of the men. Our work 'was just as important and just as difficult. With the Stadium the men will have excellent Varsity sport fields, and the co-eds, recreational fields and playgrounds that would honor any institution, including the most exclusive and expensive girl's school in the country. And that's the reason we were willing to work un- tiringly during the drive that netted nearly $700,000." When the new Memorial Stadium is completed the co-eds of the Un- iversity will no longer be seriously handicapped by a lack of physical education and playground facilities. That is the case at the present time, for the 2,000 girls are forced to play on a recreational tract of less than one acre, containing about seven tennis courts, two hockey and base- ball fields, and an archery court. The new Stadium itself will cover approximately 15 acres, and will be the center of a recreaticnal field and playground of nearly 100 acres. It is possible that half of this tract will be set aside exclusively for women. It will contain 100 tennis courts, 25 baseball diamonds, eight gridirons, numerous soccer and hockey fields, a polo field, and perhaps an artificial ice skating rink. $84,000 IN HOMES Building permits exceeding $84,000 were issued this week by Superin- tendent Gibbon of the Department of Public Works. In this modern day, following closely upon -the great World War, a similar condition is fast coming to pass, according to leaders of the movement, who are desirous only that right and justice should prevail. This result was brought about in the days following the War of the Re- bellion through the instrumentality of the Ku Klux Klan and it is said to be the endeavor of the same or- ganization to achieve the same result by meting out just and speedy pun- ishment to robbers, bootleggers, gun- men, bank banditti and morons, and to protect women and children gainst the beastly hand of the des- poiler.
