WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, JULY 30, 1921 SEES GOVERMENT AS EXPENSIVE LUXURY Editor of North Shore Bulletin, Railroad Periodical, Expresses Confidence in Gen. Dawes' Undertaking "Government these days is suite an expensive luxury," writes Luke Grant in the North Shore bulletin for July. ) "According to the preliminary estimates made, it will require $60 from every man, woman and child in the United States to pay the ex- penses of the federal government for the coming year. "And what gets our goat, to use the language of Milton," remarks Mr. Grant, "is that there are quite a lot of people clamoring for fur- ther extension of government con- trol of industry, which can only re- sult in increased taxes." Citing the connection between in- creased taxes and extension of the functions of the government, Mr. Grant affirms that "Of course if we are going to insist that the govern- ment regulate this and that we must be prepared to pay the price of such regulation." In another phase of his editorial, Mr. Grant makes the statement that "Two very hopeful events have taken place in the last' month or two in the direction of greater economy and more efficiency in government. One is the adoption by' congress of a national budget system, arid the other is the appoint- ment of Gen. Charles G. Dawes to put the budget system into effect." Praising the advantages of the budget system and the confidence inspired by the appointment of Gen. Dawes. the writer goes on to say, "General Dawes, however, has a herculean job on his hands, for the Augean stables. he has undertaken to clean out have been accumulating a lot of dirt in the last generation or two. That he will do the job, if it is humanly possible to do it, is the confident belief of the nation." and of Mr. Grant. WILL PAVE STREETS NAMED AFTER GOLD STAR HEROES The Village Council at its last Reaches 84th Year; ! But Never Quit Work! William M. Hoyt, Pioneer Resident of Winnetka, Hcnored by Chicago | Historical Society William M. Hoyt, one of Winnet- ka's pioneer citizens who has main- tained a summer residence at 550 Sheridan road far the past forty years, was accorded high honor by the Chicago Historical society on Tues- day, July 26, his eighty-fourth birth- day, at the unveiling of a portrait of the veteran Chicago business man, painted by Marie G. Cameron. Mr. Hoyt came to Chicago sixty- eight years ago from New Haven. Vt., his birthplace, and established the grocery firm of W. M. Hoyt and Co. His building occupied the site of old Fort Dearborn and was torn down in recent years to make way for the new Boulevard Link bridge. With the structure went the memorial tab- let of the Fort Dearborn massacre which Mr. Hoyt is interested in hav- ing replaced at the northeast embra- | sure of the bridge at the exact spot | where the building stood. Mr. Hoyt's birthday was celebrat- ed at a gathering of the family and friends at a dinner Tuesday evening. Mr. and Mrs. Hoyt recently celebrat- | ed their sixty-first wedding anniver- sary. In a recent interview Mr. stated that out of the sixty-eight years he has lived in Chicago, he has been in business for himself six- ty-seven years. He was wearing a Realtor badge at the time of the in- terview and, pointing to it, stated that he had taken an active part in the recent National Real Estate con- vention in Chicago. He still main- tains a real estate office at 41 Fast Ohio street. Mr. Hoyt laughingly declared he could beat anyone of his age playing golf, with the exception of John D. Rockefeller. The Grand Old Man, as he is often characterized, is as vigorous and Spry as the youngest, his eighty-four years of rightful activity having given him title to many, many more years of usefulness and honor.
