WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, OCTOBER 8, 1921 3 work has been shown very clearly to be an artificial distinction with no basis in reality, a distinction inherited from an age when to work with one's hands was considered beneath a gent- | leman ; when society was divided into two main classes, the many who worked, the few who ruled, i. e. the so-called noble class. And with vary- ing minor changes that condition and that false distinction has continued fhrgugh several thousands of years. It i% surprising, then, that an idea! held current for centuries should not be uprooted, even though its falsity ~ias been clearly shown? As a matter of fact what do we mean when we speak of training the hands? Is there such a thing as an all around training of them? Would the hand training a professional baseball pitcher make him a better carpenter or architect? The writer has seen the hand of a surgeon, a violinist and a portrait painter placed side by side. Each was supple, sensitive, well form- ed and of the same general character. Each could surely be classed as a well i trained hand. Why, then, could not the surgeon paint a portrait and the violinist handle the delicate operations so easily performed by the surgeon? Would those who think of hand train- ing as something apart from intellect- ual training agree for a moment that the genius of Paderewski or a Rodin resided in their hands? Hardly! In any large asylum for the insane can be found persons, former pianists, perhaps, with finely trained hands yet with no power to call forth the music from their formerly loved instru- ments. Again, if we be consistent, how shall we classify the dentist? A hand wgsker or not? Is it his brain or his hand that is trained? And the surg- eon? Is not his ability to use his hands his chief asset, at least in establishing his reputation? The architect, the pianist, painter, sculptor--all of them express themselves primarily through the use of their hands. in all honesty may we not ask just what proportion of high school and college training is necessary to lift one out of the ranks of the hand worker into those of the brain worker? Or are we ready to accept the point of view that what we speak of as training the hands means LULLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL TL LLL LET ELLE Ld LLL) William Salmen CONTRACTOR AND BUILDER ESTIMATES cheerfullyfurnished on New or Repair Work 964 Spruce St., Winnetka Phone Winnetka 1055 4 (hand is a phase of intelligence itself. the State of Illinois, at Peoria, October really a training of the brain. The progress of a school or of a department in the school is judged by the public on the basis of what the public believes the school to be trying to accomplish.
