He refers to the many people who look back longingly to "pies of ye olden days, all gloriously brown, with a crust so crisp and tender it would melt in your mouth." This is a complaint that will be echoed by thousands, not to say millions of people. These are the de- generate days. The typical pumpkin pie of these times is a squashy sort of condition, in which the due propor- tion of creamy milk is lacking, and which consequently has a watery and vegetable sort of a taste. Moreover the crust is the greatest crime. Rammed through some large oven without that personal affection that Mother used to give to every one of her noble creations, it is a soggy a building they would want would cost $10,000 to $12,000. So they fixed up a deal with the Masonic order, by which for a rental of $420 annually they get two floors in the Masonic building for a community center. It is expected to meet expenses by rent- ing the hall for entertainments. Their new quarters are a hive of civic and social activities. During one week they had these events: Lecture on rural sociology, sewing demonstration, conference of Amer- ican legion, banquet for railroad men, dancing party for manual training school, party for children. When a community center is provided, it stimulates all forms of useful activ- ities.
