a; WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, MARCH 11, 1922 USE THE BALLOT. WOMEN ARE TOLD Mrs. G. C. Lieber Emphasizes Importance of Primaries Mrs. Gertrude C. Lieber, of Win- netka, candidate for County commis- sioner on the Republican ticket, spoke at a political mass meeting in Evanston Monday evening of this week. Mrs. Lieber, in outlining her cam- paign, said that there were a few things the women, as newly enfran- chized citizens, should stand for in the coming election. These she out- lined as follows: First: The right kind of citizen- ship. This suggests an intelligent study of the needs and conditions of the county at the present time. Second: The interested woman voter should see to it, that all wo- men voters should exercise their right of franchise at the coming pri- maries on April 11. Under the first of these headings Mr. Lieber spoke briefly on three points: First: The Forest Preserve and Skokie Preservation. The speaker cited that over 4,000,000 people visited the Preserve of Cook county last year. The majority of these were women and children. Why should not a county board be composed of both men and women who, together could look after the interests of these visitors, being sure that the right kind of men are employed to care for these picnic grounds? The speaker also said that she favored acquisition by the Forest Preserve board of every foot of ground that could be legitimately purchased. Second: Civil Service. Mrs. Lieb- er said that for many years she had been interested in Civil Service, as it has been established in all depart- ments of our government, from the federal to the county. She expressed 'a desire that Civil Service be ex- tended, so that ultimately the "Merit System" would supplant the "Spoils System." Third: Revenue. The speaker said that in this day of increasing taxa- tion she was anxious to see the peo- ple get a proper return for their money, especially as applied to the different institutions of Cook county. This would include the county hos- 'pial, the Juvenile courts, the Oak = Forest Infirmary, the county jail, and the other humanitarian institutions and projects. Mrs. Lieber said she felt that anyone who knew the facts would feel that Cook county should have a new jail. The business of getting the women voters to the polls, Mrs. Lieber em- phasized, meant the dissemination of educational propaganda and a direct setting forth of the importance of the primaries as the only means of for securing nominations political offices.
