fi 10 WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, MARCH 18, 1922 LEEION SEEKS J00S FOR 700.000 VETS Nation-Wide Appeal to Help the Unemployed oll gm Indianapolis, Ind.--Employment of 700,000 veterans of the World War who are now idle and in need will be undertaken in a great joint national effort already initiated by the Amer- ican Legion in co-operation with an impressive list of national business, civic, fraternal and welfare organiza- tions, according to announcement to- day at the national headquarters of the legion. Preliminary preparations for the campaign have been started under the direction of local units of the legion and co-operating bodies. This in- cludes a survey of conditions and suggestions for remedy in every lo- cality. This work will be completed before March 20, which shall be known as American Legion Employment Day. Hanford MacNider, national com- mander of the legion, has appealed to the President, State commanders have requested their governors, and local leaders have asked Mayors of cities and towns to set aside that day to launch by concerted effort in every community in the nation this joint drive to give work to and relieve need among the unemployed who served their country in war. Local Meetings Planned On March 20 it is planned to hold meetings under the auspices of the] joint local commitees in every city and town in the United States at which the business men and employ- ers and representatives of every ele- ment in the community life will be confronted by a survey of the situa- tion in their town with suggestions for relief which fit the conditions. Programmes will be perfected and en- Prune Shrubs Now Proper pruning rejuvenates, improper pruning destroys. Have your pruning done now, before the growing season begins. "Properly supported this concerted, localized national effort will result in the relief of 500,000 men in thirty days," declared Lemuel Bolles, nation- al adjutant of the legion, who super- vised the organization of the effort. "We are dealing with methods which have been proven. The legion has long been interested in the unemploy- ed problem. Through our own bureaus we have placed several hundred thou- sand men in jobs within the past six months. A recent concerted effort in St. Paul resulted in putting every deserving veteran to work in that city. The Louisiana department of the le- to extend .this list. Pastors of all churches will be asked to mention the movement in their sermons on Sun- day, March, 19. Legion officials assert the unemploy- ment situation among veterans has never been worse since the end of the war. The veterans are in more des- perate straits, since their savings and credit are both becoming exhausted. National Headquarters suggests that the County Engineer should be pressed to go ahead with the repair of bridges and all county improvements and to put ex-service men on the job. "Municipal enterprises will also af- ford a medium of employment," the legion suggestions state. "Woodyards, municipal recreation centers, swim- ming pools and other public projects can be established to the benefit of gion reports not a resident veteran | unemployed in the State. "We are simply endeavoring, in co-operation with other organizations, to apply everywhere and at the same time the methods and means which have been demonstrated to be effec- | tive. The public and the unemployed should be impressed by the fact that this movement is for the exclusive | Float- | benefit of the resident veteran. ers and transients can expect no con- sideration. The slogan of the move- ment might well be, 'Every com- munity cares for its own. If you want a job go home and the home folks will care for you."" Co-operation Asked Mr. Bolles announced that national heads of the following organizations had been urged to co-operate with the legion and to transmit instructions to this effect down to their local units: American Legion Auxiliary, United States Chamber of Commerce, Rotary, Kiwanis and Lions clubs, Red Cross, Y. Paris Finds Way to End Auto Slaughter Paris--The Prefect of Police of Paris, Robert Loullier, has found a | a radical means of obliging drivers of motor vehicles in the streets to be more careful. So many accidents to pedestrians have occurred through carelessness that M. Loullier has is- sued instructions that in future when | any motor vehicle runs down a pedes- | trian or is in any way responsible for | serious collisions the car shall be con- | fiscated and put under seal and the driver sent to prison. Should the driver be found guilty he shall serve a term of imprison- ment and his car will be sold. If left free he shall be allowed to regain possession of his car and only receive a severe reprimand. These instruc- tions have taught motor drivers in Paris to be extremely cautious.
