Florence Kiper Frank 'Awarded First Place in Play Competition N the recent one-act play con- test, held under the auspices of the Drama Study Class of the Winnetka Women's club, "Cabin- ed," by Florence Kiper Frank, was awarded first place, "The Simple Life," by Mrs. Gertrude Kiper, second place. "Sister Kate," by Mrs. Kiper and "The May Queen," by Mrs. Tal- iaferro Milton, tied for third place. The judges were Professor Franklin B. Snyder of Northwestern university, Miss Sarah Buffington of Evanston and the Columbia College of Expression, Mary A. Blood, director. The committee feels that the contest was very successful in stimulating in- terst in original work and looks for- ward with hopes to even greater ac- complishments by Winnetka play- wrights. At an early date it is planned to have some of the winning plays read and some acted at the Woman's club. --0-- The MacDowell Musical Club held its regular meeting on March 13, at the home of Mrs. Robert Smith, 310 Fairview avenue. An afternoon was devoted to the study of Spanish Mu- sic. Mrs. John C. Marshall, who was the assisting guest, gave a delightful talk on.tihe subject. Having enjoyed many personal experiences in Mexico, her remarks were particularly inter- esting and instructive. Mrs. Harry Barnum, vice- president, presided in the absence of Mrs. Willoughby Walling, president, who is in the south. A well chosen program of German com- positions was given under the direc- tion of Mrs. Jerry W. Rotschild. Mrs. Harry W. Moses, a local seprano. appeared in several groups and charmed the audience with excellent interpretations of Schubert, Schu- man and Liszt. Mr. Hubert Carlin, an artist-pupil from the Mary Woods Chase studios, gave three interesting groups of piano numbers and responded grae ciously to the insistent demands of the audience for several encores. --_---- On Wednesday afternoon, Mrs, Carlton Prouty was hostess at a birth- day party given in honor of her son, Carlton Prouty, Jr. The guests In- cluded the second grade class at Horace Mann school of which he is a member, and the teacherst Owing to the fact that the class was too large to be entertained in Mrs. Prou- ty's home, she conceived the idea of setting a table in one corner of Kreb's Pharmacy, where a delicious feast of ice cream and cake was partaken of, and Easter favors were distributed. ly Mr. and Mrs. Rogers K. The evening's work was devoted to sewing on babies' garments for southern mountaineers, this being the wor selected for the Lenten season. After refreshments were served the meeting adjourned.
