Twelve | Major,--took the cigar away from Beautiful Auditorium The Memorial hall will seat 840 in fixed open chairs, the floor being pitched toward the stage. There is an orchestra pit, and the stage itself is of adequate size for most school activities. But by throwing open fold- ing doors the gymnasium is added to the stage thus providing ample room for elaborate performances and pa- geants. The William G. Hibbard Memorial gymnasium is a gymnasium of stand- ard size, finished with salt glazed brick on the inside, and is well light- ed. Besides the apparatus room and physical director's office shown in the plans, there is a shower room in the basement. The corridors flanking the gymnasium open out to the playground and the Skokie. Emphasize Practical Work The special rooms are of unusual interest, since they make possible the practical training over and above that secured from books. The wood-working shop, for ex- ample, is a large, well-lighted, brick- lined room equipped with benches, wood-working machinery and a ma- chine lathe. Separated from the wood- working shop on the east by a glass partition is a small forge room with one or two forges to be used in con- nection with the shop work. On the west is the print shop, to which the printing presses, type cases, etc., will be moved from the Horace Mann School. Science, Cooking Rooms On the opposite side of the north corridor are the general science laboratory, cooking room, and sewing room. The sewing room is provided with fitting rooms in which the girls may try on the dresses they make for themselves. The sewing room opens into the cooking room by two doors, so that it may be used also as a lunch room. The partition between the two rooms has a sliding panel, through which food can be passed to the counter in the sewing room, the sewing tables being used as lunch tables at noon. The cooking room has a kitchen unit in the corner nearest the sew- ing room where school lunches will be prepared, the rest of the room being occupied by standard domestic science desks and equipment. Beyond the cooking room is a gen- eral science laboratory which will also "be used as a session re' for the children. Class room No. is, ciigsfirst rom north of the assembly hall, is finished as an art room. It contains a large open fire place. There are casement windows with window seats and the whole room is made to simu- late a living room. Here the girls will Jearn the principles of interior decoration as well as receive their regular instruction in art work. Farther down the corridor comes the finishing room, which is for the joint use of the art department and the shops. Children from the art room take their rougher work into the finish- ing room and boys from the wood- working shop do their painting and varnishing here, away from the saw- dust of the manual traing room. | Dr. Charles E. Autos, Mules Kill More Than Planes (Continued from Page 1) infirmary where he requested the Doctor to wash his eyes thinking that oil had blinded him. The Doctor gave him a good cigar to smoke and seated him in an easy chair. In the meantime, the instruments had been sent to the laboratory and a rough cabibration made which showed that a height of nearly eight miles had been attained and that the plane had him, put him to bed and said, "Schroe- der, you're a dead man and don't know it." Coast to Coast in 8 Hours Major Schroeder explained that the 2400 miles from San Francisco to New York, air line, could easily be ac- complished in eight hours, with the assistance of the trade winds which blow at well nigh 300 miles per hour. Major and Mrs. Schroder have a plane now in which they take week- end jaunts. They made the trip to Omaha, Nebraska, to attend the Amer- ican Legion Convention, starting after breakfast and arriving before noon. After the meeting, several military pilots renewed their acquaintance with "Shorty" and reminisced over the days of the war. And everyone went shortcake and the Major's story of modern adventure had hit the spot.
