LOCAL CHILDREN WIN HONORS N CONTEST Make Creditable Showing in Music Memory Contest Winnetka's public schools sent a "game" little team into the finals of the Music Memory Contest conducted recently at Orchestra hall, Chicago. In spite of handicaps in losing a month of the allotted time for prepa- ration the local team maintained a fine spirit and, although it did not bring home one of the big prizes, made a very creditable showing, and, best of all, the children have stored away in their minds and hearts some masterpieces of musical lierature and may feel themselves to be on more | than speaking terms with the artists who produced the great compositions. | Girls Tie for Lead. In the finals Ruth Hamburger and Frances Anderson tied for high score. Each of these girls will receive a book of Ravinia Grand Opera tickets for the summer season. The other members of the team, Joyce Whit- man, Frances Etzbach, Ruth Roth, and the alternates, Margaret Stults and Morris Hirsch, will receive season tickets for the children's orchestra concerts, winter season. While the contest was intended for the sixth, seventh and eighth grades | only, a group of fifth grade children who have a room teacher who is en- thusiastic over music, entered the competition and took away some of the honors. The highest score of Win- netka's team of fifteen at the prelim- inary contest at New Trier High school was achieved by Margaret Belote of the fifth grade, and Isabel Milton, also of the fifth grade, made the final team of five. It seemed best to limit the final team to children of the sixth, seventh and eighth grades, but recognition is to be made of the fine work of these children. They are to enjoy equal honors with the team in receiving season tickets to the Children's concerts. The Ravinia season ticket prizes were offered by Laird Bell and Mrs. Aaron Younker. The season tickets to Children's concerts by Mrs. P. B. Kohlsaat. Deny Petition to Extend Hubbard Woods Store Area The Winnetka Board of Appeals on Zoning held a meeting Monday, April 17, and considered the petition of property owners on the west side of Linden avenue between Merrill and Scott av enues to have the property rezoned as a "C" Commerical district. After giving the matter careful con- sideration, the board decided that since there had been no change in conditions since the property was | originally zoned and the amount of business frontage specified by the Zoning ordinance is adequate for present needs, it was thought advis- able to deny the petition to change the designation. STOP 'FIREWORKS SALE An ordinance was passed at the last meeting of the Village council prohibiting the sale in the village of all fireworks. The action of the coun- cil was in accordance with a recom- mendation from the Illinois State Fire { Marshal. Tel. Wilmette 1949 ARAM K.
