a SR Nl RY a MORE CHECKS FOR NEAR EAST RELIEF Wilmette and Glencoe Or- ganizations Send Gifts Continued appeals for funds to save from starvation suffering children in Armenia, Syria and other parts of the Near East has resulted in in- creased activity on the part of the local workers for Near East Relief. Two contributions have. lately been acknowledged by the Illinois Head- quarters, 19 South LaSalle street, Chi- cago. Miss Dorothy Hess of Wil: mette sent $15.75, comprising gifts from the Primary Department of the First Methodist Episcopal Sunday school, and a receipt has been sent to S. B. Pope, 675 Greenwood avenue, Glencoe, acknowledging the offering of $143.85 from the North Shore Methodist Episcopal church, of which he is the treasurer. In a report made to Congress under date of March 31, Near East Relief reported that total expenditures of $63,800,000 had been made by the or- ganization during the last seven years. As a result of this generosity on the 1,000,000 women and children were saved from starvation. Conditions Worse Now The report states that conditions are worse throughout the Near East today than they have been at any time since the Armistice, due to the enforced exile of the Armenian people from their ancestral homes in Central Turkey--the continued warfare be- tween the Turkish Nationalists and the Greeks--the cutting off of food supplies from the north and the in- flux of tens of thousands of Russian, Greek, Jewish and other refugees from the famine areas of Russia. Scores of deaths are occurring daily from starvation in Ervian, Alexandro- pol, Karakliss and other cities of Rus- sian Armenia, while hundreds of thousands of Armenian refugees from Cilicia and Anatolia are today home- less and dependent upon American re- lief. The object of the campaign in Illi- nois is to save from starvation 20,000 orphan children, and is being conduct- ed by a committee headed by Former Governor Frank O. Lowden. M.
