- - -- = HINTS TO IMPROVE THE: MAIL GERVIGE Postmaster Gives Some Ad- vice For Postal Week The feature of Postal Improvement Week, May 1 to 7, is to secure a better co-operation between the patrons and the local post office. What is meant by this co-operation is best enumerated as follows: 1. It is suggested that heavy mail- ers mail early and often instead of holding their mail until 4 or 5 o'clock in the evening. By mailing early and often serious congestion is avoided and, obviously, the service at the post office is improved. 2. Patrons can assist in the ex- peditious handling of mail by correct- ly addressing their mail, as to street, number, city and state, and putting the return address in the upper left hand corner. The Wilmette office re- ceives from 200 to 300 improperly ad- dressed letters daily which requires the attention of a clerk for three hours to give directory service, and correct the addresses. Seventy-five per cent of this work could be elimi- nated if patrons would exercise care when addressing their mail. 3. Parcel post packages should be wrapped in heavy paper and securely tied with strong cord. Fragile arti- cles easily broken must be packed in excelsior, sawdust or other cushion- ing material to prevent damage. Liquids when in glass bottles must be packed in sawdust, cotton or other absorbent material to prevent the con- tents destroying mail matter in the event of breakage. All parcel post matter should be addressed just as would be a letter, containing the NAME and ADDRESS of the sender in the upper left hand corner. All addresses should be confined to one side of the parcel, The sender should place his name and address on a card and enclose it in the parcel. Fire Department For Efficient Services Winnetka's Fire department did some efficient fire fighting last Friday at the Ernest White residence, 391 Hawthorne lane. The prompt response to the fire alarm and the efficient man- ner in which the department extin- guished a blaze which for a time threatened destruction of the home leads Mrs. White to express her ap- preciation in the following words: "We desire to publicly thank the Winnetka Fire department for the promptness of its response to the summons and the efficient work in extinguishing the fire at 391 Haw- thorne lane last Friday. The excel- lent work of the department no doubt saved the residence from destruction." Camp Card Party Proves Big Success; Nets $425 The committee in charge of the Camp Card party, Mrs. Arthur M. Bar- rett chairman, which was given at the Winnetka Woman's club April 26, de- sires to announce that, though the returns are not quite all in as yet, the proceeds will be about $425. This is most gratifying, and the committee is highly appreciative of the splendid support which was given by the many friends who came to play cards and to listen to the delightful program so generously rendered by Mrs. Laird Bell, Mrs. Asa Cooley and Mrs. Clifford Ewart.
