WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, MAY 6, 1922 Child Delights in Recital Helen Ley, Henry Corbett, violinist, Friday evening, May 5, at the Winnetka Woman's club. COPELAND At least nine out of every ten peo- ple have experienced a strong im- pulse to spend a vacation on a west- ern ranch but have given up the idea because it has seemed such a venture- some undertaking to go into unknown territory and to a strange ranch where they know just what they will find at the seashore or the northern lakes. The more active person is afraid of running into a de luxe ranch with Pittsburg millionaires, bridge whist and dressing for dinner. The more fastidious person balks at the idea of unheated rooms and other discom- forts. These fears are absolutely groundless and it is a great pity that so many people allow themselves to be cheated out of this delightful form of vacation. The truth of the matter is that there are ranches of every kind and anyone, by making proper inquiries in ad- vance, can find precisely the ranch to satisfy his or her particular taste. There are the large, carefully organ- jzed "dude" ranches, there are the small and simpler dude ranches; and there are a few genuine bona fide ranches which take in a few "paying guests" to help meet expenses. The larger ranches offer more ranch life but are necessarily located in the lower, more fertile valleys. The small- er ranch is generally closer to the mountains. You should have no difficulty in finding some friend who has had ex- perience with western ranches and who can advise you where to go. A number of us from Winnetka have spent our vacations a dozen years or more rambling through the mountains of Wyoming and Montana and have passed by many of the better known dude ranches. Travelling foot-loose with all of our supplies on pack rhorses, we have eyed with scorn the more settled inmates of the ranch houses until last summer when we dis- covered one small ranch which im- pressed all of us as being the ideal spot for a vacation, next to actually camping out. Please let me state that I have not the slightest financial interest in this ranch, so have no personal reasons for boosting it. But in this case, instead of being at the bottom of a valley from which one rides all morning to reach the moun- tains and all afternon getting back, the ranch houses are located high up on the first shoulder of the moun- tains north of the North Fork of the Shoshone River, 2,000 feet above the Yellowstone-Cody Road. It looks di- rectly out upon a tremendous sweep of wide canyon backed by range after range of the Absaroaka Mountains. A short climb behind the ranch reach- es a divide which looks north over another sweep of rough country to- ward Sunlight Basin and Clark's Fork. The ranch is built to accommodate about fifteen people in small cabins. It is owned and operated by two men that we have known well and whom we both admire and trust. Phone 694 words, here is a spot where a person or a family could, at a very reason- able cost, spend a heavenly vacation at any time from June to November. It is right at the edge of the big game country, yet accessible to Cody by a 25-mile automobile ride. The more strenuous person can find all the wild country that he wants in any di- rection within a radius of 100 miles. But for everyone there is the joy of the high outlook from the ranch across the canyon and toward the mountains in all directions with their constantly changing lights, colors and shadows. The ranch is on a gradually rolling slope .and perfectly safe for children of all ages. Needless to add it would be a Paradise for a boy or girl getting the first initiation into the mysteries of ranch life, mountain lore and wood craft. I have described this one ranch in detail as it is the one that I would select for myself. But I know of many others with beautiful locations on the Forks of the Shoshone, the 'Wind River, the Big Horns, etc. 1 feel that all of us who have known and loved this country should put ourselves at the disposal of our Win- netka friends who so far have not tasted the joys of the western coun- try. I only hope that anyone who is at all interested in a vacation of this kind but who does not know where to go, will let me put them in touch with one or a number of ranches. Aec- tion of this kind should be begun as soon as possible as the most attrac- tive ranches are signed up pretty well in advance during the more popular months. Some Winnetka "ranchers" who have shared with Mr. Copeland the joys of the great open country are: Frederick K. Copeland, Mrs. Christian Fenger, Miss Augusta Fenger, Mr. and Mrs. William P. Sidney, Miss Dorothy Sterling, Miss Clara Hollis, Harry Dunbaugh and William D. Sidley.
