fh] WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, MAY 6, 1922 PLAYERS APPEAR IN SEADOL BENEFIT Give Three One-Act Plays. at Woman's Club; Aid School For Blind Several Local Amateurs to Be Seen in Production Thursday and Friday evenings, May 11 and 12 Winnetka will have an op- portunity to witness the North Shore Players who are to present three one- act plays at the Winnetka Woman's club in a benefit performance designed to swell the funds of the Hadley School for the Blind. The program will consist of plays fully costumed and staged, and a sixteen piece orches- tra, under direction of Earl Fox, will provide the incidental music. Sidney M. Spiegel, Jr., president of the North Shore Players, in an inter- view this week gave quite a lengthy outline of the scope of talent in the organization and the high ideals to which the Players aspire. "The North Shore Players," said | .Spiegel," are true amateur performers in every sense of that term. Many people, when thinking of the amateur, retain in the back of their minds a hazy idea of slap-stick comedy and mediocre performance. But the true amateur player is very often as good, if not superior, to many players of the so-called 'Road Companies.' In fact, the North Shore Players are a group of professional people, who, for the love of their art, have spent consider- able time and money in perfecting themselves in their chosen avocation. Defines the Amateur "Here is where the North Shore Players differ from the ordinary actor. The North Shore Players have no fi- nancial interest in perfecting their talent. On the contrary, they devote many hours of their time to study and rehearsals, which emphasizes the fact that their love is truly in their art. An organization such as this, com- posed of earnest, capable and talented people in our own community, best ex- presses my idea of what amateur theatricals really should mean. They are amateurs in the highest sense, ear- rying on their work, not for personal gain, but for pure love of the thing." Both of these performances are for a worthy cause. Every cent of the profits are to go to the Hadley School. Everyone connected with the organiza- tion is giving unselfishly of time and energy to make this a success. The three one-act plays consist of "The Last Rehearsal," featuring Joe Driscoll, Mary Rieckson, Joan Golden, James Gibson, and Miss Rall. "Home for Lunch," featuring Katherine Crush and Sidney M. Spiegel, Jr., and "Man- sions," starring Miss Elizabeth Duffy, Miss, Speck and Robert Andrews. The playlets are under the direction of Mrs. Jessie Royce Landis, well known in north shore dramatic circles for her work in several of the season's most important productions. Joe Driscoll Limehouse District Film Shows at Community House Genuine pits of the London Lime- house district are seen in the early scenes of "Three Live Ghosts," a new Paramount picture which will be shown at the Community House Fri- day, May 12. To those Americans who only know this quarter of London as it lives in the pages of Thomas Burke's stories, it will be interesting to see Limehouse as it really is. The celebrated Chinese quarter, which most tourists seem to imagine vaguely as a vast uncharted district of dark- est London in reality only comprises the two thoroughfares of Limehouse Causeway and Pennyfields.
