WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, MAY 20, 1922 SHES NIE PTIEA-O0 North Shore Dealer Com- ments on Fashions "Shoe styles are getting a lot more reasonable and practical" according to Mr. S. Pool, a Chicago Ave. mer- chant. ¥ 4 "I refer to the new low heels and the great popularity of the sport shoe for Summer. The fact is that two-thirds of the shoes that will be worn between now and September will have several layers less on the heels than those of last season. i "Shoes are quite a bit more roomy. The toes are not anywhere near as cramped for space. "You may recall how a few years ago the boy scouts of Evanston -were examined to see whether they were wearing shoes of the correct size. The examiners found a very alarming condition; about 95 per cent of the boys were wearing shoes that were too small or shoes of incorrect shape. You know a large shoe is just as bad for the foot as a small one, "Many people do not realize that stockings that are too small are just as hard on the feet as shoes that are too small. This is especially true with infants and growing children. I have actually seen cases of babies whose toes were turned: under and temporarily deformed as a result of the "pinch" that came from stock- ings." Mr. Pool, who is an Evanstonian, and who has conducted a shoe store at 1608 Chicago avenue for six years, has recently put in entirely new fur- nishings and windows. Facilities have been added to make his service for women and children far better. The idea of a complete stock of infants, children's and wo- men's hosiery is a new feature. Will Rogers Stars in Next Community Film Will Rogers, one of the most promi- nent actors on the silversheet, has the role of Professor Ezra Botts in the Paramount Picture, "One Glorious Day" which is to be shown at the Community House, Friday, May 26. "One Glorious Day" is the tale of a bashful bachelor, Prof. Ezra Botts, whom fate helped to live one day just as he wished. It is said to be the most unique comedy ever screened. ""Shorty" a Hero as Fire Threatens Sullivan Dwelling "Shorty" the newsboy, proprietor of the news and confectionery stand at the Linden avenue "L" terminal at Wilmette, known to hundreds of Wil- mette commuters--but always just as "Shorty"--has been placed on the hero roll by the residents of southeast Wilmette. Wednesday night, May 10, it is re- ported, "Shorty" displayed the alert- ness and ingenuity born of many years' experience as a purveyor of '"poi- pers" in and about Chicago, and as a direct result of his quick wittedness rescued three little boys, and sounded the alarm that saved the Thomas E. Sullivan home at 334 Gregory avenue, from possible destruction by fire. "Shorty", in passing the Sullivan home, heard the frantic calls of a maid alone with the children as Mr. and Mrs. Sullivan were away at the the- atre. Rushing to the house he found the entire basement ablaze. The three small Sullivan hoys, Raymond, Thomas jr., and Richard, were in their beds on the second floor, the maid informed, "Shorty" took in the situation in a flash and rushed to a neighboring house, from where the alarm was sounded throughout the neighborhood and the fire department summoned to the scene. Ladders were secured from a near- by garage and before long the volun- teer rescuers were at work like trained firemen. The little fellows, trapped in a smoke filled house, were rescued via the ladder-route, only after Thomas Jr, had been overcome with smoke. Physicians resuscitated the child. "When a Feller", Etc.-- When Water Is Shut Off Water, water everywhere in Lake Michigan--and Winnetka had not a drop to drink last Sunday. Unforeseen circumstances which required shut- ting 'down the Municipal Water and Light plant longer than anticipated while making necessary changes, kept the vilage totally dry and without light throughout the Sabbath. The vilage manager explains the circum- stances in the "Municipal Column," to be found in another section of this issue. TO REALTORS' CONVENTION H. H.
