10 WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 18, 1922 I J. C. COBB HEADS IMPROVEMENT BODY (Continued from Page 1) parkways of the Public Library at Oak and Linden streets. The ques- tion of suitable planting along Hib- bard Road has also had consideration, and it is probable that this work will be done as soon as permanent grades are established. Planted Lombardy Poplars Incidentally, there seems to be an erroneous impression that the Lom- bardy poplars which are now so orna- amental along Willow street were planted by the late W. G. Hibbard. This is not the case, although Mr. Hibbard did much to improve the ap- pearance of that part of town; among other things, giving what is called "Wayside" Park at the corner of Willow and Hibbard road. The thees in question were planted by the Village Improvement associ- ation some years ago, under di- rection of Mr. Morris L. Greeley. Will Place Tablet A memorial tablet will shortly be placed on an elm tree at the North- west corner of the village green, which was planted some years ago as a memorial to the late James A. Hunt, founder of the association. Mrs. William A. Otis, chairman of the Municipal Music committee, re- ports that the Christmas Carols for use around tthe free planted by the assiciation on the village green are being printed, and that the usual carols will take place at 5 o'clock on the afternoon of Christmas Eve. The Municipal Art committee is also very busy. Mrs. John Vennema has succeeded Mrs. Frederick O. Mason, resigned, as chairman. In the Pub- lic Library and in the various school buildings, there are between 80 and 100 pictures and casts belonging to the association, placed there to aid the children in forming a proper appreci- ation of the best things in art. The committee is at present going over these pictures and casts, having them renovated and repaired and rear- ranged in the proper grade rooms. As soon as this work is completed, a study will be made of the require- ments of the new Skokie school for both pictures and possibly mural dec- orations and this work will be under- taken shortly. Ponder Important Matters At the recent meeting of the as- sociation, several other subjects of great importance tc the village as a whole were discussed, among them planting of shubbery and trees in newly opened subdivision; a per- manent solution of the garbage dis- posal and dry waste disposal prob- lems; track depression; and co- operation of the association with the Hubbard Woods Improvement as- sociation and the Indian Hill associ- ation in their work. Invite Officials It was unanimously voted to in- vite the Presidents of these two as- sociations to attend all meetings of the Board of Managers of the Village Improvement association proper. During the past year, as the as- sociation was not doing any very act- ive work, no solicitation was made for membership. In 1921, there were more than 300 active members of the association who paid the dues of $2 each. The membership committee, Frank D. Fulton, chairman, is preparing to conduct an active campaign for new members, as the plans of the associ- ation, it is believed, deserve the sup- port of the entire village, both moral and financial. Fire Truck Gets Annual Inspection, Overhauling The big American-La France fire truck at the local engine house was inspected and overhauled by an expert sent out by the American-La France company last week. The inspection is an annual event. At given intervals inspectors from the truck company make the rounds and thoroughly go over the fire appa- ratus. At the same time the local fire- men take advantage of the opportu- nity to clean and repair any of the apparatus which would necessitate the laying up of the truck for a few hours.
