Chemical reactions take place much more readily at high temperatures than at low, so that the efficiency of a storage battery is considerably less in cold weather than it is in warm weather, and this, coupled with the fact that the number of hours of dark- ness during which the car is likely to be used is greater in cold weather than in warm, often results in the battery becoming discharged or fail- ing to carry the load imposed upon it during the winter, even though it operated very satisfactorily during the summer months. The engine is always harder to start in cold weather due to the fact that gasoline does not vaporize as readily and the oil in all the bearings and around the pistons is stiff, making the engine much harder to turn over. In such cases it is often necessary to increase the output of the generator during cer- tain months of the year in order to make up for the loss in efficiency and increase in output the battery is called upon to supply. What Summer Use Does The condtion of operation during the summer months and long days may, on the other hand, result in seri- ous damage to the battery on account of excessive charging in proportion to discharge. During the summer the motor turns over more easily and the battery is much more efficient, the gasoline vaporizes more easily and the lamps are not used as much as they are in the winter. This condi- tion of recharging can be relieved by having the generator output reduced and by burning the lights during the day, depending upon the amount of charge put into the battery. There are a few simple rules for the care of the battery that the owner can follow out and increase the length of servite of the battery. Rules for Battery Care Keep the interior of the battery box clean and dry. Put nothing but the battery in the battery box. Keep the top of the battery clean and dry. Moisture on the top of the battery causes a leakage of current between the terminals of the cells and tends to discharge the battery. Do not connect spot and stop lights direct to battery. Wires will be broken and corroded if connected to the battery terminals. Connect to hot side of starting switch or ammeter. the electrolyte when necessary. Never add acid. Here are rules for the care of storage batteries when not in service: Out-of-Service Rules 'Whén the automobile is put away during the winter months the battery should be removed and placed in storage. It is desirable to have the temperature of the room where the battery is kept fairly constant and as near 70 degrees Fahrenheit as pos- sible. During the out-of-service period the hattery should be cycled every 30 days, that is, charged and discharged and then recharged to eapacity so as to keep the active material of the plate in a live and healthful condi- tion. If the battery is allowed to stand for long periods and is not given at- tention the plates become sulphated Fuel Gas Now Demanded by Smaller Industries The demand of so-called smaller in- dustries for fuel gas--a feature in the expanding field of gas in manufactur- ing noted for a long time--continues to manifest itself in the towns served by the Public Service company. New concerns are adopting it in addition to the many representing familiar trades. Nearly all parts of the terri- tory are involved. in all cases marked improvement in processes has followed. The American Gas association rc search people figure out a list of hun- dreds of small industries which are potential gas users.
