And, while the Players do not em- ploy negative slogans, the above phrase is emphatically what the Play- ers want the north shore play-going public to understand at the outset of the 1922-23 season. Thus speaks Sidney M. Spiegel, Jr., president of the successful and popu- lar, albeit youthful north shore dra- matic organization. "We want our patrons ard friends on the north shore to know that we desire absolutely nothing, in the mone- tary sense, from our productions. Every play we produce this season is to be for some worthy cause. The beneficiary in each instance gets every cent of the profits, after the actual ex- pense of production is met. "The Players are in the dramatic work for a very definite reason and that is, to elevate the meaning of the term, 'Amateur' We want to prove to the intelligent north shore public that the common interpretation placed upon 'amateur' as denoting amateurish, unfinished, crude, unde- veloped and pitifully wanting in quali- ty and polish, is erroneous. " 'Amateur,' as applied to athletics certainly warrants no such interpre- tation. Then why must 'Amateur' as pertaining to dramatics be considered synonymous with something that is ridiculously amusing? "Every member of a North Shore Players' cast is trained in dramatics. Most of the players have had profes- sional experience. The others have been trained in high school and col- lege dramatics and could fit in readily in the professional ranks. "Last season the North Shore Play- ers gave a benefit for the William A. Hadley Correspondence School for the Blind. This year there will be benefit performances for other worthy causes. "It will be seen, then, that we really have a double purrose in view, to give first class amateur productions that will elevate 'amateur' to its righttul place in dramatics, and to do real good through the medium of our produc- tions." Attractive New Residences Lift Building Permit Total Two permits for $12 000 structures and one permit for a $7,000 building operation swelled the total value of permits issued in Winnetka during the past week to $39,650, according to | figures given out by Erwin Dames, superintendent of public works. The two largest constructions are being undertaken by Floyd M. Davis and John R. Bedkin. The former was granted a permit to erect a $12,500 two-story frame and stucco house at 1014 Ely street. Bodkin will build a two-story frame house at 152 DBert- ling lane, at an estimated cost of $12,000. At 220 Woodland avenue, William Salmen was granted a permit to con- struct a frame and stucco residence | at a cost of $7,500. A $5,000 two- story residence was authorized to be constructed at 466 Linden avenue. A permit was also granted to Mec- Guire and Orr, real estate dealers, to build an office on Sheridan road in the Trustees subdivision. Permits for the construction of pri- vate garages werc granted to A. Laser, 418 Provident avenue; W. H. K. Ben- nett, 579 Hill terrace; W. H. Putnam, 546 Elder lane: C. F. M. Miller, 936 Elm street; E. Soukuk, 599 Fir street; and O. C. Randolph, 1440 North ave- nue. CHURCH LAYS PLANS FOR FUND CANVASS (Continued from page one) Aid Home Missions Rev. and Mrs. Paul N. Reynolds represent the church as missionaries to China. In addition, there is a long list of educational and religious insti- tutions, among negroes and foreign- ers and in poverty-stricken commun- ities in our own land, the support for which the church takes some respon- sibility. Community House is so well known that it needs no description. $9,000 of the church's budget is for the use of the Board of Governors of Com- munity House in addition to which rests the church's guarantee against any deficit in operating expense. The church uses Community House on Sunday mornings for services of the church school but otherwise has no exclusive privileges. Nor does it exercise more than a merely nominal contro! through approval of the se- lections for members of the Board of Governors representing the whole village, as submitted by the Board itself. More than eighty-three thou- sand people used Community House during the year. Forty-seven activi- ties were organized by Community House. Thirty-two other organiza- tions used it. The pledge asked in the campaign on December 3 will in- clude, for members of the parish, their share of the maintenance of Community House for another year. Conway, Dinner Chairman The dinner for canvassers sched- uled for Monday evening, November 27, promises to be fully as interesting as the dinner of a year ago. Invita- tions have been issued to all whom it was thought might be interested in learning something of the plans and of the work of the church, whether or not they are willing to canvass. Barrett Conway is chairman of the Dinner committee. Reservations must be in by Saturday, November 25, and those who are interested are urged to make sure of a place at the table by notifying Mr. Conway. The Finance committee is host for the evening.
