In the absence of Mrs. ' Badgerow, Mrs. Ernest Ballard charmingly in- troduced the speaker of the afternoon, Miss Harriet Vittum. Miss Vittum is head resident of Northwestern '%umi- versity settlement. She chose as her subject. "Today's Challenge to the American Woman." Miss Vittum told many interesting but pathetic in- cidents in the lives of her neighbors. More particularly of the children and young girls, of young women" who wrap soap and yeast day after day, who go home to overcrowed rooms, unlighted and unsanitary, with pos- sibly the weekly washing stretched out to dry. These girls, like all oth: ers, are desirous of some recreation and must take what is offered to them, which is usually vicious and unwhole- some.
