9 WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, DECEMBER 9, 1922 NTA TAKES LEAGE ON SKOKIE TOY SHOP Entire School Turns out to Make Toys for Poor Children of Chicago DADS, MOTHERS HELP Christmas Program to Cli- max Work Season Santa Claus has just completed ar- rangements for establishing a branch toy factory here in Winnetka. At the Skokie school assembly hall Wednesday morning of this week, director of Shopwork Charles A. Kin- ney announced that Santa Claus had taken a lease on the entire school shops for a period of ten days, begin- ning next Monday. A call was sent out for several hun- dred workers, skilled mechanics for repairing mechanical toys, specialists in doll anatomy, expert hand and machine sewers, designers, painters and wooden toy experts. By noon what might have been a labor shortage was relieved by the entire school signing up for the various positions. Cheer for 475 Kiddies The plan as outlined calls for the production and distribution by the pupils of Skokie school of one or more toys for each of 475 children in Chi- cago institutions. About three-fourths of the toys will be made in the sew- ing and wood shops of the school, the remainder being toys brought in for repairs. Beginning next Monday the shops will be organized on a fac- tory production basis and the entire efforts of the pupils concentrated on the making of dolls, doll beds, cradles and furniture, toy carts, areoplanes, boats and toy animals. Every Department Helps Under the direction of Miss Beals, Miss Reese, Miss Ganning and Miss Ratliff, dresses will be made for one hundred dolls. Misyg Baer's group has volunteered the making of one hundred candy bags. Miss Pearson's and Miss Ostlund's groups will make the bedding for the one hundred beds and cradles. Mr. Sipple of the shop department will join Miss Hartwell of the science department in the 'repairing of mechanical toys, among which are thirty sets of mechanical trains contributed by William Ogden Coleman, of Hill road, president of the American Flyer company. The painting and decorating of the toys will be under the direction of Miss Gahan, Mrs. Brenton, Mrs. Har- shaw and Miss Coe. Dad, Mother Also Help One of the most important features of the project will be the calling in of the parents to work in the shops one evening next week. Parents will be given their choice of either Wednes- day or Friday evening, the shops being in operation both evenings from 7:30 to 9:30 o'clock. The parents will work in groups with a foreman and inspector for each group, and on the same class of toys as are being made by the children. Thursday, December 21, the entire collection of gifts will be on exhi- bition and a special Christmas pro- gram of music and dramatics arranged by Mrs. Kohlsaat, Mrs. Murray and Miss Whitehead will furnish an ap- propriate ending to the largest Christ- mas project in the Winnetka schools.
