WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, DECEMBER 30, 1922 MISS STELLA SKINNER DIES OF WJURIES Noted Lecturer Succumbs as Result of Automobile - Accident Prof. Stella Skinner, noted lecturer and director of art at Northwestern university, died early Wednesday at the Evanston hospital as a result of injuries sustained when she was struck by an automobile six weeks ago. While her condition has been serious since the time of the accident, November 13, it was not regarded as immediately alarming until an infec- tion set in 48 hours before her death occurred. A coroners' inquest took place Thursday morning at 10 o'clock at the Hebblethwaite Under- taking rooms. Miss Skinner was born in Grand Rapids, Mich, in 1857, the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Aaron Shel- don Skinner. After post graduate work at Pratt institute, where she was graduated from the department of art in 1890, she attended the Yale art school lectures and continued her study of art in several European gal- leries. She was supervisor of draw- ing in the public schools of New Haven and instructor of art in the New York state normal school, before acceting the art professorship at Northwestern university in 1908. Her home was at 718 Clark st. Prominent Lecturer Besides her work in the university, Miss Skinner has been widely in de- mand as a lecturer throughout the United States. She was a special lecturer of the Art Institute of Chi- cago, and an instructor during thc summer session of the teachers' col- lege at Columbia university in 1912. The art collection of the University guild has been made largely under her direction. "Northwestern university suffers a great loss in the death of Prof. Skin- ner," said President Walter Dill Scott this morning. "As a patron of art she had a profound influence among the students of the university and Woon the community as well. She was a woman of unusually interest- ing personality and of high attain- ments." "I have never known anyone who knew so well how to live as Miss Skinner," said Dean Mary Ross Pot- ter, a close personal friend. "It seems to me that no one got more out of life than she, even with limited time and limited resources. She was be- beloved by a large circle of friends, numbering many young people as well as those of her own age. She was always interested in civic affairs and in church work, never failing to do her part and more. Her delightful personality and rare gifts gave to the place in the university life that it will be impossible to fill."
