WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, JANUARY 13, 1923 13 PHOTO DRAMAS ADELPHI THEATRE The week of January 14 started aus- piciously at the Adelphi Theatre with the arrival on that day of Rodolph Valentino in "The Young Rajah." This super-picture will be at the Adelphi on Sunday, Monday and Tues- day. Wanda Hawley appears oppo- site the man of "sheik" fame, The film, "More to be pitied than Scorned," will show at the Adelphi Wednesday and Thursday evenings, January 17 and 18. A comedy feature for these two days will be "Mud and Sand," a screamingly funny burles- que of the famous photoplay, "Blood and Sand." Friday's customary double feature bill at the Adelphi will bring Roy Stewart and Shirley Mason to the Adelphi on January 19. Stewart ap- pears in "The Sage Brush Trail," and Miss Mason will be seen in "The New Teacher." Jane Novak will be the Adelphi attraction on Saturday, January 20, in "Thelma," a picturization of the famous novel and play of that title. HOWARD THEATRE "The Man from Hell's River," will provide entertainment for Howard Theatre patrons on Sunday, January 14. Beginning Monday, January 15, and continuing through Friday, January 19, the Howard will show the spectacular photoplay, "When Knighthood was in Flower," starring Marion Davies. This Cosmopolitan production has thronged ILoop theatres for many weeks, and Howard followers are an- ticipating with keen delight the show- ing of the great film "right at home." The Howard Orchestra Supreme, James Thatcher, conductor, has ar- ranged a magnificent program of mu- sic to accompany the production. Future attractions at the Howard include "Manslaughter," with Thomas Meighan in the stellar role, and "Clarence," in which Wallace Reid does the best work of his illustrious film career. HOYBURN THEATRE Were seats at the Hoyburn Theatre reserved, the management would have nothing to do but wait for the crowds for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of next week. The attraction is "The Hottentot," a Thomas Ince presentation of Willie Collier's greatest stage success of that name, starring Douglas McLean, Madge Bellamy and Raymond Hatton. The balance of next week is just as "big" as 'tother end, for Wesley Bar- ry, a prime favorite with Hoyburn- ians, appears in his latest achieve- ment, "Rags and Riches." It is unusual that a neighborhood theatre should have but two pictures for .an entire week, but Manager Sturdivant of the Hoyburn seems to have selected a winning combination. "When Knighthood was in Flower" will be shown at the Hoyburn Mon- day, Tuesday and Wednesday, Janu- ary 22, 23 and 24. Social Happenings "Don Quixote," Mr. Tony Sarg's lat- est production, which is to be given at the Skokie school, Winnetka, Wed- nesday afternoon and evening, Janu- ary 24, and at the Evanston Woman's club on Saturday morning and eve- ning, January 27, is pronounced by many in the literary and artistic world as the finest and most superb work he has yet achieved. The facility with which the popular story moves through its varied and humor- ous phases proves to be a continuous delight to young and old. More than 500 strings are in operation during the performance, and Don Quixote's attacks upon the flock of sheep or the windmill and the final tilting contest with the barber in full armor are thrilling sights. The small marionette show within a marionettes show in the fourth act is the most ingenious and artistic mechanical triumph ever displayed on the stage. All of the characters of the book appear, and in addition there is an entire menagerie --a naughty dog, a dancing bear and a flock of sheep. ee Qe Arrangements for one of the larg- est benefit bridge parties of the sea- son are under way, directed by a NEWELL AND RETCHIN How ARD N.
